The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a statement on the morning of August 3, 2026 warning of the approach of typhoon number 13, internationally named Dolphin. The frontal system sustains considerable force as it moves rapidly toward the Okinawa archipelago, requiring immediate preparation from the local population. Forecasters also warn that the southern region of Kyushu will face strong sea disturbances in the coming days, even if the center of the cyclone does not hit the area directly.

Wind speed and exact location of the weather phenomenon

During the measurement carried out at 9 am local time, radars identified the system near the island of Minamitorishima, advancing northwest at a constant speed of 20 km/h. The core of the storm recorded a severe atmospheric pressure of 945 hectopascals, generating continuous winds of 45 meters per second and violent gusts that exceed the 60 meters per second mark. To get a real dimension of the danger, this central pressure equates the system to a category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic, creating a field of destructive winds that covers a radius of 185 kilometers from its eye.

Predicted arrival of the cyclone to the Japanese islands

Climate models indicate that the meteorological formation should bypass the southern portion of Japanese territory by August 5th, reaching the waters near Minami Daito the following day. The moment of greatest danger for Okinawa residents is scheduled to occur between August 7th and 8th. Although experts predict a slight loss of strength in this interval, downgrading the status to a “strong” category storm with a pressure of 950 hectopascals and winds of 40 meters per second, the potential for structural destruction remains extremely high.

Dangerous sea reflections in the East China Sea

Although the main route focuses on the extreme south of the country, the energy dissipated by the cyclone will travel across the ocean long before the arrival of the heavy clouds. There is an extreme likelihood of massive waves forming to hit the southern coast of Kyushu, the East China Sea basin and the Bungo Strait by the end of this week. Faced with this scenario, the coastal communities of Okinawa and Amami were ordered to maintain absolute vigilance against coastal flooding and violent storm surges.

Guidelines from authorities to protect human life

Tourists and residents who are in risk zones need to adopt strict safety protocols in the face of the imminent natural disaster. Local city halls reinforce that attention must be doubled, especially for those who live close to the coast. To minimize damage and protect the population, civil defense agencies have established clear guidelines for immediate action:

  • Immediately suspend any type of recreational navigation or commercial fishing.
  • Monitor radio and television updates issued by official monitoring bodies.
  • Prepare emergency kits and identify safe escape routes in the event of an evacuation order.

Residents of Kyushu, even outside the direct collision path, should avoid walks on beaches and rocky shores due to the risk of deadly rip currents and sudden rise in tides.

Historical storm behavior in the Western Pacific

The emergence of low pressure systems in the Western Pacific Ocean during the month of August follows a seasonal pattern that frequently punishes the coast of Japan, with a special focus on the southern archipelagos. The Dolphin’s biggest difference is its ability to sustain devastating energy for a prolonged period over exceptionally hot waters, which multiplies the chances of electrical blackouts and severe damage in regions with high population density. This aggressive behavior requires government planning and civil society’s response to occur well in advance to avoid irreparable losses.
