The signing of Vozinha by Colo-Colo generated an intense debate about the Chilean club’s objectives. While the arrival of the 40-year-old goalkeeper had global repercussions, many questioned whether the decision was aimed more at marketing than sporting performance. During his official presentation on August 5, 2026, Aníbal Mosa, president of Colo-Colo, made a point of refuting the accusations that the player’s arrival would just be a publicity stunt.
“For me, it’s very positive, even if some people want to see it as something negative or advertising”, declared Aníbal Mosa. The president added that the initiative not only positioned Colo-Colo on the world stage, but also placed the country and the Chilean league in the global spotlight. The club’s strategy, which even launched a line of goalkeeper products, aims to increase the international visibility of the team and Chile.
Daniel Morón, Libertadores champion goalkeeper for Colo-Colo in 1991 and current sports manager of the club, revealed that the possibility of hiring Vozinha seemed unthinkable, given the athlete’s worldwide projection.
Voice shares her perspective on pressure in sport
“It was something wonderful. We saw the World Cup, everything he created in the world, how he influenced children, youth and people,” said Morón. He expressed surprise at being able to bring the goalkeeper to Colo-Colo or Chile, as the athlete could have opted for leagues like MLS or Europe.
Asked again if Vozinha’s hiring had the main objective of attracting the spotlight, to the detriment of sporting performance, president Aníbal Mosa refuted the criticism.
“The most important thing is that we have a goalkeeper chosen among the three best in his position at the World Cup,” said Mosa. He highlighted Vozinha’s presence at the Monumental Stadium as the most important fact for the club.
Vozinha’s presence also opened the door to the possibility of international friendlies for Colo-Colo, including matches against the Cape Verde national team. Mosa did not rule out such clashes, but reinforced that the club’s priority is in the sporting calendar, seeking to maintain its lead in the Chilean Championship – with a 12-point advantage over Universidad de Chile – and win the title.
“Vozinha’s arrival opens up many opportunities that continue to emerge, but our priority is the sports calendar”, explained the president. He concluded by saying that, if there are windows to play with Cape Verde, Inter Miami or Olimpia after the championship, these opportunities will be welcome, but the team’s sporting focus will not be lost.
