Tennis player Alexander Zverev, third in the world rankings and top seed at the Masters 1000 in Montreal after the absences of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, was surprised and eliminated in the first round of the tournament on August 5, 2026. The German suffered a comeback defeat to the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor, number 69 in the world, with partials of 6/7 (3), 6/2 and 6/4.
This clash marked the German’s return to the court since losing the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner a month earlier. The early fall in Montreal contrasts with the recent good form of Zverev, who in June had lifted the Roland Garros trophy, his 25th and most significant title so far.

Alexander Zverev has a respectable record in Canadian tournaments, with 16 wins in 22 games. He was champion in 2017, in his second appearance in the country, beating Roger Federer in the decision. In the previous edition, in Toronto, the German tennis player stopped in the semifinals, being surpassed by Karen Khachanov.
For Tallon Griekspoor, the triumph is all the more remarkable as he was winless in his three previous Canadian Masters 1000 appearances. In 2023, the Dutchman was defeated by Zverev in the same tournament. Griekspoor advanced to the third round after beating 88th-ranked Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 7-5 in his previous match, and now awaits the winner between Hungarian Fabian Marozsan and Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
