A new beta version of the system software on PlayStation 5 Pro now automatically activates the “Enhance PSSR image quality” function. After installation, the console will apply the enhanced PSSR to all games that already support the technology, eliminating the need for an individual patch for each title. This setting can still be deactivated manually, if the user wishes, in the Screen and Video menu, specifically in the Video Output section.

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, known by the acronym PSSR, represents an advanced image reconstruction system, based on machine learning, that is an integral part of the PS5 Pro. The updated model of this technology had already been launched globally by Sony Interactive Entertainment in March 2026 through a previous system update. The option that was introduced at the time allowed application to PS5 Pro games developed for the first version of PSSR, with results that varied depending on the title. The current beta version, therefore, modifies the default behavior of an existing feature, causing it to be activated automatically after the system update, which simplifies use for players, who will no longer need manual adjustments to take advantage of the visual improvement.

The fundamental purpose of this technology is to deliver sharper images and superior stability in games that support it. Sony had already demonstrated how the enhanced PSSR works and how it operates on previously released titles during the March global event. It is important to note that automatic activation, implemented by this new version, is exclusive to the PS5 Pro and does not extend to the standard version of the console.

For PS5 Pro users, Optimized PSSR is now set as the default setting, but retains the flexibility to be turned off at any time.

Additionally, the beta introduces a specific modification that impacts both PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro in several participating countries. When manually disabling Bluetooth, the system prevents access to rest mode and, simultaneously, disables HDMI Link. According to the notes distributed by Sony to participants, this configuration is linked to the management of controls in environments such as eSports venues and similar scenarios, where it may be necessary to restrict available wireless connections.

Other notable improvements include general improvements to system software performance and stability. Sony hasn’t released additional details about what specific fixes this update encompasses, but initial information about how it works comes from users invited to the beta program and the release notes that accompany the update.

Currently, the features remain in the testing phase and no official date has been announced for the public release of the update. The beta program gives selected users the opportunity for early access to new PS5 software; Those who eventually encounter problems have the option of returning to the previous stable version of the system.
