Politician Elmar Nascimento, who is seeking a position as federal deputy for União Brasil, changed his racial self-declaration in three recent electoral elections. Records from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) revealed the change on August 6, 2026, indicating that the parliamentarian has already identified himself as white, brown and black in different disputes.

Electoral data shows that, for the 2026 elections, the candidate declared himself black. In previous disputes, specifically in 2022, he had been registered as brown, while in 2018, the information pointed to the color being white.

After being asked about the situation, Elmar Nascimento explained that the categorization as black, referring to the 2026 election, resulted from a typing mistake on the part of the acronym. The politician stated that the procedure to rectify the registration has already begun, and União Brasil confirmed that the change was in fact requested.

The report sought out the Superior Electoral Court for clarification on the case and is awaiting an official position from the institution.

At 56 years old, Elmar Nascimento is from Campo Formoso, a city in the interior of Bahia. He has already been elected federal deputy in 2014, 2018 and 2022, and in this electoral cycle he is running for his fourth term in the National Congress.
