Windows 11 will receive its next major update, version 26H2, in October 2026. Despite expectations, it will not bring many innovative features, but will offer the main advantage of extending the operating system’s support period.

Microsoft has previously confirmed that the launch will take place in the fall and that the update will come as an enablement package. This indicates that the improvements and features already present in the system will simply be enabled with this new version.

Although there is a possibility that the update will be released in the last week of September, following the pattern of version 25H2, the effective rollout usually extends until October for most users. Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2 were also released in October, suggesting a similar timeline for 26H2.

Few new features mark the arrival of Windows 11 26H2

Version 26H2 of Windows 11 is not expected to introduce a wide range of new features. Microsoft chose to release several features in recent months, such as Point-in-Time Restore and Cloud Rebuild, rather than bundling them together for this specific release.

A truly first-of-its-kind feature in the 26H2 will be the automatic cloud backup functionality, which will cover Windows settings, Microsoft Store updates, and certain personal files. This option will be enabled by default, but users are free to disable it.

The main attraction for installing version 26H2 is the extension of the Windows 11 support cycle for another year. Those using the 24H2 Home or Pro version will have updates end after October 13, 2026. 25H2 users who do not migrate to 26H2 will see support end on October 12, 2027. However, when adopting 26H2, security and feature updates will be guaranteed until October 2028.

Windows 11 26H2 update download size will be reduced.

The upgrade to version 26H2 will again occur via an enablement package, with an estimated size of just 174 KB. All necessary modifications are already present in the 24H2 and 25H2 versions of Windows 11, inserted through previous and current updates, remaining inactive until activated by the new package.

Windows 11 26H1 users will not have the option to upgrade to version 26H2. This version, 26H1, was created specifically for computers equipped with Snapdragon X2 or Nvidia RTX Spark CPUs. For these PCs with ARM processors, the next update will be 27H2, scheduled for the second half of 2027, a period in which Microsoft plans to harmonize development lines.
