Japanese audio technology giant Pioneer has announced the launch of a sound device for vehicles that takes direct aim at nostalgia. Named TS-X40, the equipment revives the iconic design of the Carrozzeria family speakers — a sub-brand originally introduced in Japan in 1986 —, merging the visual identity of that decade with cutting-edge acoustic engineering. The product is expected to hit Asian shelves in July, costing around 33,000 yen, an amount that represents around R$1,150 at the current price, just awaiting official confirmation of the price list.

The Japanese company’s initiative rides on a global wave of appreciation for classic automobiles, with emphasis on Japanese collector vehicles, known in the automotive world as “youngtimers”. The car modification market is experiencing a moment of strong nostalgia, which drives owners to search for accessories capable of reproducing the exact look and acoustics of that time, whilst demanding the durability and safety of components manufactured today.

Modernized lighting effects highlight the classic logo in the cabin

The main visual attraction of the launch lies in the Carrozzeria line emblem, positioned on the back of the chassis. When the driver activates the electrical part, the sign emits a strong bluish light, designed to be clearly seen by both passengers and pedestrians around the car. To maximize this shiny effect, the back surface received a slightly mirrored finish, which multiplies reflections and gives the product an air of sophistication.

This luminous feature acts as a link between the golden age of automotive personalization and today’s innovations. While the external design transports the viewer to the coveted sound systems of forty years ago, the adoption of low-power light-emitting diodes (LED) shows that the internal architecture has been rigorously adapted to meet modern demands for energy efficiency and extended useful life.

Robust construction and silver paint guarantee a nostalgic look to the equipment

The body of the device is coated with a silver dye with a matte touch, ensuring a discreet and scratch-resistant appearance. On the main face, thick metal rims protect the three speakers, creating a direct contrast with the dark screens on the sides and with the six mounting screws left purposefully visible, replicating a very common design signature in sound equipment that led sales at the end of the 20th century.

Assessing the physical proportions, the device has 321 millimeters of horizontal extension, 123 millimeters of elevation and 152 millimeters of depth. The total mass of the structure, including the necessary supports for fixing, reaches 1.50 kilos, which facilitates transport and assembly, in addition to providing the structural stability required to block annoying vibrations when playing music tracks with intense bass.

Industrial designers conceived the item to harmoniously integrate into different generations of cabins. This visual balance allows the speaker to be accommodated both in the luggage compartment of a restored sports coupe from the 1980s and in the cargo area of a brand new vehicle, a strategy that significantly expands the brand’s potential buyer base.

Three-way system optimizes bass and treble reproduction in the car

The launch’s acoustic structure operates with a system of three separate channels. To handle the deep bass, the design incorporates a 13-centimeter woofer equipped with an elongated cone. The medium frequencies, responsible for vocals and base instruments, are reproduced by a 5.7 centimeter central speaker. Finally, the highest and most crystal clear tones are the responsibility of a dome-shaped tweeter, which is 1.7 centimeters in diameter.

In order to intensify the presence of low frequencies, the engineering team added a double duct mechanism directed to the exit of the air accumulated in the box. This physical architecture, combined with high-performance materials, results in crystal-clear reproduction for any musical genre. The device’s operating spectrum ranges from 45 hertz to 36 thousand hertz, covering practically the entire sound range that the human auditory system can identify without distortion.

The maximum power limit supported by the device reaches the 100 watt mark during extreme volume peaks. Under continuous operating conditions, the nominal load stabilizes at 25 watts, producing an acoustic pressure measured at 84 decibels. Featuring a conventional impedance of 4 ohms, the speaker is immediately compatible with the overwhelming majority of amplifiers currently sold in the automotive sector.

The most suitable location for installation, normally on the trunk lid, contributes to the uniform dispersion of sound waves throughout the car’s interior. When operating in sync with the speakers installed in the front doors, the package provides an immersive audio experience, eliminating auditory blind spots and improving listening quality for the driver and all passengers.

Factory accessory package facilitates assembly without altering the bodywork

The lower part of the housing was structured to receive screws in multiple positions, solving the problem of those who need to fix the device on surfaces with irregular cuts. The metal plates included in the packaging make it possible to anchor it in the middle, at the edges or at the back of the equipment, ensuring maximum stability in any sound customization configuration.

The electrical circuit, which includes the audio wiring and LED power cables, adopts universal standard connectors, eliminating the need to mutilate the car’s original wiring harness and speeding up service in audio stores. The product box leaves the factory containing the following components:

  • Six metal supports for adjusting the lower base
  • Long screws M6 (75 millimeters) and short φ4 (12 millimeters)
  • Integral kit containing fixing nuts and washers
  • Two wiring harnesses dedicated to audio transmission
  • Two exclusive cables for powering the illuminated sign
  • Rubberized bases for cushioning and visual protection covers
  • Quick-connect connectors facing the power grid

This attention to fastening details prevents the vehicle owner from having to drill into the car’s metal structure or order custom brackets. The practicality of assembly makes the launch a highly coveted option for hobbyists who prefer to install their own audio projects in their garage.

Balance between acoustic fidelity and visual appeal defines the new project

The technological development behind this novelty sought the exact proportion between durability of materials and purity in the reproduction of tracks. The distribution of internal components ensures that the singer’s voice remains clear, without being overshadowed by the bass frequencies emitted by the exhaust ducts. Even though it requires a reduced area in the luggage compartment, the sound performance directly rivals speakers of larger dimensions and higher values.

The introduction of this equipment reinforces Pioneer’s tactic of capitalizing on the nostalgia of car lovers, offering a design renowned in the past, but equipped with contemporary technology. The start of sales scheduled for July promises to shake up car audio stores, focusing on a customer profile that values retro aesthetics, but does not give up crystal clear and vigorous audio for daily commutes.
