Tennis player João Fonseca, after his elimination in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Montreal on August 10, 2026, established his competition plan for the end of the season. The schedule foresees the participation of the current world number 27 in seven more tournaments, including a commitment for the Davis Cup.
The 19-year-old athlete’s next challenge will be the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, in the United States. As one of the top seeds, Fonseca will make his debut directly in the second round. After the event in Ohio, the Rio native will head to New York to compete in the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.
Following its calendar, Brazil’s clash against Switzerland for the Davis Cup in Rio de Janeiro, the ATP 500 in Tokyo, the Masters 1000 in Shanghai and the ATP 500 in Basel, Switzerland, are confirmed, where it will seek to defend the title won last year. To close 2026, João will compete in the Masters 1000 in Paris, scheduled between the 2nd and 8th of November. The schedule may undergo adjustments depending on your performance in the tournaments already scheduled.

With the 100 points achieved in Montreal, João Fonseca reached 1,800 points and provisionally moved up two positions in the world rankings. Currently ranked 25th, the Brazilian can still be overtaken by the American Brandon Nakashima (29th) and the Spaniard Daniel Merida (40th), who advanced to the quarterfinals of this week’s Masters 1000.
Until the end of the season, Fonseca has a record of 18 wins and 13 losses in 13 tournaments played and will need to defend 650 points. Of this total, 500 points refer to the Basel ATP 500 title. There is a great possibility that Brazil’s number 1 will surpass his best position in the career ranking, which was 24th place in November of the previous year.
From 2026 onwards, João Fonseca started to follow regulations from the ATP, responsible for the world tennis circuit, aimed at the top 30 in the ranking at the end of each year. These elite athletes are required to fulfill a series of commitments over the following 12 months and receive bonuses for participation. They are called “commitment players” or “commitment players”.
Among the requirements, a player in the top 30 must participate in eight of the nine tournaments in the Masters 1000 series, with the exception of Monte Carlo, which takes place in April. In addition, they must compete in five ATP 500 championships, one of which must be held after the US Open, the last Grand Slam on the calendar.
Failure to comply with these guidelines results in significant punishments, including loss of points and financial fines. Absence is only justified in cases of serious medical problems or undeniable personal reasons.

In 2025, the young Brazilian tennis player competed in seven Masters 1000 (Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Toronto, Cincinnati and Paris) and three ATP 500 (Rio, Halle and Basel). Both participations were below the stipulated by the ATP for a top 30. For this reason, João and his technical team developed a new strategic plan for the year 2026.
