The game The Lord of the Rings: War of the North, originally created by Snowblind Studios in 2011, was surprisingly relaunched on August 11, 2026. The new edition, called Legacy Edition, was made available by Aspyr without any prior official announcement, and is now accessible on the latest platforms.
Previously available for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and computers, the title can now be purchased for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, through the GOG and Steam digital stores. The adventure is characterized by a darker and more realistic setting in Middle-earth, introducing an unprecedented threat.

Instead of focusing on fighting Sauron, The Lord of the Rings: War of the North pits players against Agandaûr. This corrupted Númenórean, one of the Dark Lord’s most loyal servants, established a powerful force base in Fornost, a ruined city that remained abandoned by humanity for around 300 years.

Meet the original protagonists who mark The Lord of the Rings: War of the North
One of the biggest differences of The Lord of the Rings: War of the North since its release was the inclusion of completely new characters. During the journey, players can control Eradan, a human master of stealth; Andriel, an elf with magical abilities; and Farin, a dwarf with notable strength and endurance.
In addition to its main offline single-player campaign, the game offers options for local multiplayer with split screen or online matches. Although the protagonists are original creations from Snowblind Studios, iconic figures such as Aragorn, Gandalf and Elrond make appearances and interact with the main trio throughout the mission.
The return of The Lord of the Rings: War of the North is part of Embracer Group’s strategy of fully exploring the franchise, acquired a few years ago. In Brazil, the PC version is the most affordable, costing R$59.99 on Steam and GOG, with all platforms receiving an initial 10% discount at launch.
Despite having achieved “cult game” status over the years, the title received a mixed reception upon its original debut. On Metacritic, average reviews varied, with the PC version achieving 66 points, followed by the PS3 at 63 and Xbox 360 at 61, suggesting that new players should adjust their expectations for the Legacy Edition.
