The martial arts universe lost one of its most emblematic names this Tuesday, August 13, 2026, with the death of former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón, at 33 years of age. The confirmation of his death ends a painful journey of more than a decade with severe neurological consequences, acquired during an official combat in 2015. The official announcement was made by his father, Richard Colón, who closely followed his son’s long and exhausting fight for survival over the last eleven years. The news generated an immediate wave of commotion among athletes, promoters and fans of the noble art across the planet.

The fateful fight that forever changed the athlete’s trajectory

The interruption of an extremely promising career occurred on the night of October 17, 2015, during a high-profile event held in the city of Fairfax, in the US state of Virginia. On that occasion, the then undefeated fighter, who boasted an impressive professional record of 16 wins and no losses, took to the ring to face American Terrel Williams. What should have been another step towards the world title turned into the darkest episode in the sport’s recent history, marked by refereeing failures and violence outside the rules.

During the assaults, the young Puerto Rican talent suffered repeated illegal blows to the back of the head, an offense known in boxing jargon as “rabbit punch”. These attacks are strictly prohibited by athletic commissions precisely because of the high risk of irreparable damage to the brain stem and spinal cord. Despite the fighter’s constant complaints to the match referee, pointing to the back of his own head, the penalties applied to the opponent were not enough to stop the sequence of irregular attacks that would culminate in the fatal injury.

Shortly after the confrontation ended, the seriousness of the situation became evident when the former boxer began to show acute neurological symptoms while still in the arena’s changing rooms. He reported extreme dizziness, suffered episodes of vomiting and fainted in front of his technical team, needing to be rushed to the nearest medical center. At the hospital, imaging tests revealed a massive brain bleed, forcing neurosurgeons to perform an emergency procedure to relieve intracranial pressure, at which point the patient entered a deep state of coma.
