New visual indicator of online presence arrives in the WhatsApp application in testing
The WhatsApp application has started testing a new visual signal that informs the availability of contacts. The innovation, according to findings, incorporates a small green circle in the profile photo, a feature already present on platforms such as Instagram and Messenger. Currently, the functionality has only been released to a select group of participants in the beta versions for Android and iPhone.
This marker, a small green ball, appears on the contact details screen while the user is active in the messenger and disappears as soon as the user closes the application. The main intention is to replace the textual indication of “online” with a more intuitive alert, streamlining the perception of who can respond to a conversation.

The company WhatsApp clarified that the new signage maintains the previously established privacy policies. The green dot will only be visible to those who allow sharing of their “online” and “last seen” status. If the user chooses to hide this data, the indicator will not be shown to third parties.
Simultaneously, WhatsApp is developing a revamped Contacts section for Android and iPhone devices. This area will centrally display which users are online or have recently accessed the application. The new visual indicator is part of this update and has been implemented in preliminary testing to familiarize users before the new interface is fully released.

When will WhatsApp’s new online bookmark feature be available?

The functionality has not yet been generally released. Currently, the feature remains in the evaluation stage, initially being made available to participants in the beta testing program. However, a small portion of users of the standard version of WhatsApp for iPhone can now see the green circle, with the purpose of validating the new feature. The company did not provide an exact date for the tool to be widely released in the stable version of the application.
At this initial stage, the online status indicator is displayed exclusively on the contact details screen, accessed by tapping the individual’s name during an interaction. The purpose is to allow users to adapt to the new signage before it is expanded to other areas of the application in the future, such as the conversation list and the main interface.
