Tragic accident during Volta de Portugal takes life of 19-year-old British cyclist
A serious accident during the Volta de Portugal, one of the most traditional cycling competitions in the country, resulted in the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, aged 19, on August 14, 2026. The young athlete succumbed to his injuries after what happened in the eighth stage of the race.
Organizers of the 87th Tour of Portugal issued a statement on a social media platform, expressing deep regret at the loss. “The organizers of the 87th Tour of Portugal deeply regret having to announce the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident suffered in the eighth stage of the competition”, they stated.

The vehicle that hit Finlay Tarling was not part of the official race caravan and was traveling in the opposite direction. The impact was fatal for the cyclist, according to published information.

Born in Wales, Finlay Tarling was recognized as an expert in time trials, a discipline where cyclists compete individually to achieve the fastest time on a course. He had joined the NSN Development Team the previous year.
The news of the young athlete’s death provoked a wave of mourning in Portugal. The President of Portugal, António José Seguro, expressed his condolences, declaring that Tarling’s passing “plunged the peloton, the competition and the host country into mourning”.
