A bottlenose dolphin, known scientifically as *Tursiops truncatus*, was found lifeless on a beach in Mongaguá, on the coast of São Paulo, on August 11, 2026. The animal, which weighed around 210 kilos, was in an advanced state of decomposition, which made it impossible to identify the cause of death.

Details of the animal’s discovery in Mongaguá

The dolphin’s body stranded on the beach in the Itaóca neighborhood, a well-known location in the city of Mongaguá. The discovery mobilized teams from the local city hall, who were responsible for removing the animal from the sand strip. The action had the support and monitoring of Instituto Biopesca, an organization dedicated to the observation of marine animals in the Baixada Santista region.

Characteristics of the dolphin found on the coast of São Paulo

The analyzes carried out by the Biopesca Institute allowed the identification of several characteristics of the dolphin, even with its advanced state of decomposition. The data collected is crucial for recording and studying local marine fauna.

  • Species:Bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops truncatus*)
  • Gender:Male
  • Length:3.12 meters
  • Weight:210 kilos

The importance of the Biopesca Institute in monitoring the coast

The Biopesca Institute plays a fundamental role in monitoring marine life on the beaches of Baixada Santista. The organization’s work is essential to record occurrences such as animal strandings, collect data on species and identify trends that may indicate environmental problems. Although the cause of death has not been determined in this specific case, documentation of these events contributes to marine research and conservation.

About the species Tursiops truncatus, the bottlenose dolphin

The bottlenose dolphin, or *Tursiops truncatus*, is one of the best-known and most studied dolphin species globally. Recognized for their intelligence and sociability, these marine mammals inhabit temperate and tropical waters around the world. They are often seen in coastal areas, but can also be found in deeper waters. The species gained great popularity through cultural productions, with the famous dolphin Flipper, from a classic television series, being a representative of this same category.

Decomposition prevents determination of cause of death

Due to the advanced state of decomposition in which the dolphin was found, experts from the Biopesca Institute were unable to determine the exact cause of its death. Factors such as disease, collisions with vessels, accidental fishing or ingestion of plastic waste are some of the common reasons for the death of marine animals, but the condition of the body prevents an accurate conclusion.
