Ukraine has intensified its long-range attacks against Russian territory, using domestically manufactured missiles. The military actions targeted a strategic airfield and a rocket development center crucial to the Russian satellite internet network, similar to the Starlink system. The incidents occurred on August 15, 2026, with targets located hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Ukrainian attacks target Russian space technology

Ukraine’s armed forces confirmed the use of nationally produced Flamingo cruise missiles in an attack on the Rocket Development Center of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, this base plays a vital role in the Russian war machine, being responsible for the production of rocket and electronics technology. The location of the center, approximately 900 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, highlights Kiev’s ability to reach distant points, seeking to bring the conflict closer to Russian territory. Zelenskyy stated that it is essential to reduce Russia’s military potential so that peace is evident through concrete damage to strategic installations.

Offensive hits Russian air base in Savasleyka

In addition to the Roscosmos center, Ukrainian forces also carried out a successful attack on the Savasleyka air base. This base is located around 700 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, reinforcing Kiev’s strategy of expanding the scope of its operations. The attack on a Russian military airfield could have implications for Moscow’s ability to carry out its own air operations, as these bases are essential for logistical and operational support.

Moscow demands answers over alleged weapons package

In parallel to the attacks, Moscow demanded explanations from Washington and Ankara about a possible plan to transfer a “substantial arsenal” of American weapons and ammunition that would be in Turkish custody, destined for Kiev. This demand reflects Russian concern about continued military support for Ukraine and the implications such a deployment could have on the battlefield, especially at a time of escalating Ukrainian attacks.

Russian incidents and counterattacks

  • A Ukrainian drone hit a house in the city of Shatura in the Moscow region, injuring two people, including a nine-year-old child. Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that the child’s health condition had been stabilized.
  • Russia also carried out attacks in Ukraine, hitting an apartment building in the city of Marhanets, in the southeast of the country. Local authorities confirmed the death of a three-month-old baby in the bombing.

Expanding Ukrainian reach changes the dynamics of the conflict

Ukraine’s series of long-range attacks, notably with self-made missiles, represents a significant change in the dynamics of the conflict. The ability to strike targets hundreds of kilometers from the border, including strategic infrastructure such as rocket development centers and air bases, demonstrates Kiev’s technological and tactical advancement. This escalation seeks to exert direct pressure on Russia, taking the impact of the war deeper into the country and, thus, seeking to reduce its war potential, in accordance with the strategy declared by President Zelenskyy.
