An international team of scientists has revealed the existence of an asteroid with a trilocated shape and a small moon, an unprecedented phenomenon in astronomy. Named 44 Nysa, the celestial body was detailed in a study that promises to offer new perspectives on planetary formation. The discovery was announced on August 16, 2026 by researchers in the United States and Chile, marking a significant advance in the observation of space objects.

The rare formation of asteroid 44 Nysa intrigued scientists

Asteroid 44 Nysa, which had been known since its first observation in 1857 by astronomer Hermann Goldschmidt, had never revealed its complexity. At that time, it was just a visible point of light between Mars and Jupiter. Currently, new analyzes carried out by experts from Arizona and Chile have shown that Nysa is not an ordinary space rock, having three distinct “heads”, or lobes.

Approximately 75 kilometers wide, Nysa is the first known asteroid to have a trilocated structure. In addition to its peculiar shape, the celestial body has a small moon, called S/2026 (44) 1, which orbits around 170 kilometers away and measures around one kilometer in diameter. This complex composition challenges conventional explanations for asteroid formation.

The potential threat of a cosmic impact

Kate Minker, lead author of the study at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, emphasized that Nysa’s discovery reveals how much is still unknown about the universe. The expert also reassured the public by stating that asteroid 44 Nysa does not represent an imminent threat to Earth. Although far away, its size and volume are alarming in a hypothetical collision scenario.

To contextualize the danger, the Chicxulub impact, responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, was caused by an object approximately 10 kilometers in diameter. Nysa is seven times wider and around 400 times more massive than the Chicxulub impactor, indicating that a possible collision would cause devastating consequences on a global scale. Small fragments of asteroids close to Earth, however, are still a reason for surveillance.

Mysteries about the origin of the asteroid’s peculiar shape

The unusual shape of asteroid 44 Nysa remains an enigma to the scientific community. Kate Minker and her team aren’t sure about the exact cause of her trilocked appearance, but they have come up with a few hypotheses. The folds on its surface could be the result of crushed moons that merged with the main body or exotic fractures resulting from cosmic events.

Another theory suggests that Nysa could be a “contact trinary,” that is, three smaller space rocks that have come together due to gravitational force. It is also possible that the asteroid was violently hit by other bodies, changing its structure over time. Its lobes could have formed from debris that stuck together.

  • Possible origins of Nysa’s trilocked form:
  • * Merger of crushed smaller moons.
    * Exotic fractures due to collisions.
    * Aggregation of three smaller rocks (contact trinary).
    * Intense impacts from other asteroids.

Composition and implications for planetary formation

Minker’s team used advanced equipment, such as the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the Very Large Telescope in Chile, to perform the detailed observations of Nysa. The data revealed that the asteroid is mainly composed of enstatite, a mineral that differs from most space rocks in its low concentration of iron. This characteristic classifies it as a type E asteroid, formed by “primordial dust” close to the Sun, dating back to the beginning of the solar system.

Studying Nysa could provide crucial insights into how Earth formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago. Most of the primordial objects that could offer this information ended up being incorporated into planets, making Nysa a valuable “laboratory”. Analysis of their material properties can help scientists better understand the processes that led to the formation of terrestrial planets in the inner Solar System.
