10-year-old child dies after being injured in landslide in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz

A 10-year-old girl who was seriously injured during a landslide in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Santa Catarina, died in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Florianópolis. The death was confirmed on the morning of August 18, 2026 by the management of the Joana de Gusmão Children’s Hospital, where the child had been hospitalized for three days.

Family tragedy caused by heavy rain

The incident that killed the child took place in the early hours of August 16, 2026, when the landslide hit the family’s residence. The incident had already claimed the life of the girl’s mother, Katrina Karla do Nascimento dos Passos, aged 44, on the same day as the burial. Other family members, the girl’s 49-year-old father and a 25-year-old stepson, were also in the house. They were treated at São Francisco hospital, in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, and were subsequently discharged.

Emergency care and child rescue

The child was found at the scene of the disaster in critical condition, with a cardiac arrest. The Military Fire Department team performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers while still at the scene, managing to stabilize the girl before her urgent transport to the Hospital Infantil Joana de Gusmão, in the capital of Santa Catarina.

In an official note, the management of Hospital Infantil Joana de Gusmão reported the patient’s death on the afternoon of August 18, 2026. The medical unit detailed that the girl had been admitted in a serious condition over the weekend, remaining under the intensive care of the medical team in the ICU until her death.

The news of the death of his mother, Katrina Karla do Nascimento dos Passos, had already caused a wave of consternation.
