George Russell secured victory in the sprint race of the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, held in Zandvoort on August 22, 2026, securing a significant result for the Mercedes team. The British driver started from pole position and maintained the lead for all 24 laps, finishing the race with an advantage of 1s360 over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Lando Norris, representing McLaren, reached third place in the dispute, coming just behind Russell’s teammate, Kimi Antonelli. At the end of the race, which took place under dry track conditions, rain began to appear.
This triumph further boosted Antonelli’s gap at the championship lead in relation to Lewis Hamilton. The Italian driver scored 224 points, while the Ferrari competitor accumulated 171. Russell occupies third place overall, with 168 points, consolidating a strong season for Mercedes and highlighting Antonelli’s performance as one of the favorites for the title.
Lewis Hamilton finished the sprint race in seventh place, behind Oscar Piastri, from McLaren, and Max Verstappen, from Red Bull. Pierre Gasly, from Alpine, was the last to enter the points zone, in eighth place.
“It was a great start to the weekend. Had there been another lap, the outcome of the race could have been quite different. I was pleased that the rain appeared when it did,” said Russell.
The British driver made an uneventful start and did not face any significant threats throughout the race. This is Russell’s third sprint race victory this season.
“I was aware that, if there was any attempt to overtake, it would occur in the final part of the race. Therefore, I knew the need to manage the tires in high-speed corners to have a greater reserve at the end”, he explained.
Lando Norris started from the front row and reached second position at the start of the race, but was overtaken by Leclerc on lap 18. The Ferrari competitor performed the maneuver on the inside of the first corner, even using soft tires, which are usually seen as less resistant than the medium tires used by most of their direct competitors.
Leclerc began to pressure Russell for the lead, while Norris had to resist Antonelli’s advances. The Italian driver had overtaken Piastri at the start, gaining a position and finishing in fourth place. Norris admitted that McLaren still needs to improve its performance.
“It would have been desirable to have been a little faster, but Charles showed an excessive pace. I don’t think the difference was due to the tires, but rather the lack of speed”, he stated.
“Our speed is not enough and there is a lot to be done. Although we are very efficient in high-speed corners, the car does not perform as expected in low-speed corners.”
The qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on August 22, 2026. The main race will be held the following day, August 23, 2026, marking what could be Zandvoort’s final appearance on the Formula 1 calendar for years to come.
