Hollywood star George Clooney has declared his support for Mark Ruffalo in relation to the controversy created by the latter’s criticism of the possible deal between Paramount and Warner Bros. Clooney emphasized the importance of allowing colleagues to “express themselves freely,” even on divisive issues.

This manifestation of solidarity took place during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, an event in which Clooney was honored with recognition for his career. At the time, he also made reference to the accusations directed at Ruffalo after his statements about the negotiation.

Clooney quoted: “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely. It’s ridiculous. Let’s not ban speech. I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it. That’s important. In fact, it’s part of how democracy works.”

Clooney’s analysis of the Paramount–Warner merger and impacts on jobs

The actor qualified the possible merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. as something “complicated”, questioning the financial logic behind the undertaking. He also expressed concern that the union of large corporations could result in job losses in the industry.

Additionally, Clooney addressed larger concerns regarding the centralization of power in the industry and discussed the impact of artificial intelligence. He anticipated that AI “is going to be a very big part” of the entertainment industry, which, in his view, could be detrimental to professionals like actors.

Addressing more personal aspects of his professional career, Clooney, aged 65 and father of two 9-year-old children, explained his preference for acting over directing. He also revealed his desire to return to the “Oceans” franchise for a new film, alongside Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, when their schedules allow.
