A young donkey, known for interacting with children and accustomed to human presence, was shot dead by a police officer at an animal sanctuary in Georgia, United States. The incident occurred when authorities were searching for a missing 12-year-old boy. The agents involved stated that they felt threatened by the animal, which had run towards them.

The police officers’ allegation generated questions and led to the opening of an investigation into the circumstances of the donkey’s death.

The case began on the night of August 29th to 30th, in the city of Rockmart, in Polk County. Several officers were mobilized to locate a 12-year-old boy who had gone missing. Hannah Israel, owner of the sanctuary, reported that police officers accessed her property without any prior warning.

At the scene, the agents reportedly came across HeeHaw, the donkey, who started making noise and advanced towards them. Interpreting the animal’s behavior as a threat, the police initially tried to control it with a stun gun before firing shots.

Hannah Israel expressed disbelief at the idea that her donkey could be considered dangerous. She said she raised HeeHaw from a puppy, bottle-feeding him, and that the animal was always familiar with people.

HeeHaw regularly participated in children’s events hosted by the sanctuary. The owner described the donkey as “a beloved member of the family” who has “made many people smile” over the years.

The 12-year-old boy who was the reason for the search was found safe approximately one hour after the incident that resulted in the donkey’s death. The police officer responsible for the shooting was suspended from his duties. Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said he was “devastated” by the situation and chose to transfer the investigation to another division.

The ongoing investigation aims to clarify the precise circumstances of the shooting. Hannah Israel, the owner of the sanctuary, started an online fundraising campaign to cover the legal costs of the case, seeking clear answers about HeeHaw’s passing.
