During a State of Play event, Square Enix showed a new perspective on Final Fantasy Resonance, a title scheduled for release on October 22, 2026. In addition, the company announced the availability of a free demo for PlayStation 5, which comprises the entire first chapter of the game. A handy feature allows progress made in the demo to carry over to the full version, ensuring players don’t lose their progress.
The fundamental concept of Final Fantasy Resonance explores the idea of how the series would have evolved if it continued to innovate in pixel art, an approach that Square Enix has already explored in other HD-2D titles, such as Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, bringing a unique look that mixes retro with modern. The game’s plot takes adventurers on a journey to protect the Crystals spread across the world and stop Veritas of the Dark, who seeks global destruction. This crystal-rich narrative is brought to life through a high-definition pixel art style known as HD-2D and incorporates classic Final Fantasy elements like chocobos and airships, an improved turn-based battle system, and a more accessible interpretation of the traditional class system.
Cinematic animation gains new life with advanced pixel art
The opening sequences and other cinematic scenes use a modern pixelated style. This production method renders 3D graphics in pixel format, delivering dynamic visuals without giving up the timeless charm that pixel art possesses.
Details on the game’s improved combat system
The Final Fantasy series’ classic turn-based command battles have been refined to offer a more accessible experience without compromising strategic depth.
One of the central elements is the timeline, which displays the order of actions of allies and enemies in the following turns. Located at the top of the screen, the timeline shows characters acting from left to right.
Another important mechanic is the “stagger” bar. When emptying the stagger bar, which is under the enemy’s health, he is stunned, prevented from acting on his turn and has his defense reduced. Mastering the right moment to apply the stagger, observing the timeline, is crucial to devising effective combat tactics.
The new Visions engine and its features
Throughout the story, players can complete events with characters encountered to obtain Visions, which are crystallized essences of those individuals. Equipping these visions and winning battles allows you to unlock new abilities.
The synergies between equipped skills are a differentiator. Even after learning a skill from one vision, it can be used with another active vision, as long as it remains within the cost limit, making it possible to combine different skills. This system offers a more accessible and evolved version of the franchise’s well-known class system, with certain skill configurations generating powerful synergies.
You can also visit vision crystal shrines around the world to acquire Visions of classic Final Fantasy heroes. By equipping them, players can use their powers.
The most recent trailer, shown during State of Play, revealed Sephiroth’s presence in the game. Players will have the opportunity to encounter and challenge Sephiroth, in hopes of winning and unlocking an exclusive reward.
Resonances are special moves specific to each Vision. They are released when a “Sweeping Stagger” occurs at the end of the Extra Phase. Resonances come in a variety of forms, not only dealing great damage, but also offering different capabilities, such as powerful area attacks and additional effects.
Introduction to powerful Espers in gameplay
Progressing through the story and completing side missions allows you to unlock powerful summons known as Espers. When summoned, Espers fight alongside the team for three turns and, on the final turn, perform a finishing move before disappearing.
Free demo already released with the first complete chapter
A demo version, which includes the complete initial chapter of the game, is now available. In this demo, enthusiasts can experience the beginning of the story and experience the improved turn-based command battle system.
