Uber launched a new autonomous transport service in the English capital on September 2, 2026, with the support of artificial intelligence technology developed by Wayve, a specialized British company. This initiative positions London as the second location in Europe to receive the platform’s robotaxis, following the previous deployment in Zagreb, where Uber established a collaboration with Pony.AI, a Chinese company in the same segment.
Initially, a licensed operator will accompany each vehicle to supervise operation, ensuring passenger safety. The companies involved clarified that the fully autonomous operation, without human presence, will be implemented at a future time, yet to be determined.
Users who request service modalities such as UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Electric can be assigned to a Ford Mustang Mach-E. These specific vehicles will be equipped with Wayve technology, and the use of the autonomous service will not involve any extra cost for the passenger, according to a joint statement from the two companies.
The inaugural phase of this service will have an initial fleet of less than 20 cars available for races.
The partnership between Uber and Wayve was established in 2024, including a financial contribution from Uber to the technology company. The purpose of this union is to bring vehicles that incorporate Wayve’s artificial intelligence to several other cities and markets around the world.
