Floating island disappears in Lake Williston and reappears 32 km away, in Canada

An intriguing floating island, measuring approximately 10,000 square meters and covered by trees, has surprised residents by appearing, disappearing and moving across the extensive Lake Williston, located in northern British Columbia, Canada. The phenomenon began to be observed in July 2026, generating curiosity and questions in the region.

After first appearing in July 2026, the floating island disappeared during August and resurfaced on August 31, displaced by more than 20 miles. The return point was close to the bank where the Ospika River meets the reservoir, adding an element of mystery to your route.

According to BC Hydro, the company responsible for managing the reservoir, the formation is a vast natural accumulation of trunks, roots and plant debris. This material washed away from the banks due to record water levels in Lake Williston, which acted as a lifting force for the landmass.
