Actress Nicole Kidman experienced severe emotional loneliness on the night she won the best actress Academy Award for The Hours in 2003, as she revealed during a sit-down conversation with host Jake Shane and fellow actress Sandra Bullock. Kidman declared that, despite achieving the ultimate professional summit at the film industry ceremony, she felt an overwhelming inner void upon returning home without a romantic partner by her side.
The 59-year-old performer explained that she felt far beyond isolated while clutching the motion picture industry’s highest honor, wishing above all else for a companion to hold during that moment.
Past divorce shadowed the high point of her career
The breakup devastated the performer.
Her marriage to Tom Cruise ended in 2001 after 11 years of shared life and co-starring roles in feature films such as Days of Thunder, Far and Away, and Eyes Wide Shut, concluding exactly two years before she claimed the leading prize from the Academy. Kidman affirmed that having both of her parents present at the venue during the ceremony could not compensate for the absence of a life partner to share the milestone.
In an interview given to author Dave Karger for the 2024 publication 50 Oscar Nights, the actress conceded that she arrived trembling and emotionally shaken at the official celebration following the event. She explained that she found it impossible to take pleasure in the festive gathering and later expressed lingering regret over experiencing deep shame throughout the evening.
Filing ended two decades with Keith Urban
The performer formally filed to dissolve her marriage with 58-year-old country singer Keith Urban in September, bringing an end to a marital union of nearly 20 years that produced two children.
Kidman stated that she must now adjust to an entirely uncharted future in the wake of her split from the New Zealand-born musician. The actress also recalled choosing to marry Cruise at the age of 22 despite receiving direct outside warnings about the potential negative fallout on her fledgling career in cinema.
