Final Redwall novel gets publication date after 16 years

Brian Jacques’ fantasy series will conclude in September 2027 with the release of its 23rd and final book. The scheduled publication completes the fictional universe 41 years after the debut of the original story.

The British author’s last written work, titled Orphans of Mossflower, will arrive posthumously alongside the franchise’s first complete box set.

Digital publishing catalog Edelweiss listed the upcoming release in a frontlist update discovered by the official Redwall fan Wiki. The catalog confirmed that the volume serves as the “final book in the series.”

Publishers provided no extra plot points, though readers expect the text to continue the narrative established in The Rogue Crew, which hit shelves in 2011.

Jacques died that same year. The author suffered a heart attack at 71, leaving The Rogue Crew as his only posthumous publication until this upcoming release. His editors have not stated how complete the manuscript was prior to his death or whether editorial staff added supplementary writing to finalize the draft.

Unconfirmed storylines connect the upcoming plot to a 2010 character-creation competition. Because the winning submission missed inclusion in The Rogue Crew before the author passed away, readers project the figure will debut in Orphans of Mossflower.

Contest winner Olivia revealed to the Redwall Wiki that she designed a haremaiden cartographer named Reisa Kartwell, explaining that the name combines the German words for travel and map to guide the characters between Salamandastron and Redwall Abbey during enemy sieges.

The previous installment detailed Abbot Thibb, the Longpatrol hares, and allied sea otters resisting Razzid Wearat and his amphibious wheeled ship at Redwall Abbey. The concluding novel will resolve how those surviving woodland creatures proceed following that conflict.

The literary announcement follows Netflix canceling its planned Redwall adaptation, while Erin Hunter’s rival Warriors franchise advances toward an animated series on Disney+ and an October 2026 video game launch.
