Astronomers track three comets approaching Earth in 2026

Astronomers confirmed visibility schedules for three comets flying close to Earth across 2026, allowing viewing opportunities from both terrestrial hemispheres. This observational calendar encompasses the celestial bodies 169P/NEAT, 161P/Hartley–IRAS, and 2P/Encke.

Celestial object 169P/NEAT initiates the observation period

The comet 169P/NEAT reaches its closest approach to Earth on 11 August 2026 at an estimated magnitude of 13.9 before arriving at perihelion on 21 September 2026 with an expected magnitude of 12.0.

Observers in the Northern Hemisphere can view the comet high above the horizon in twilight skies after sunset, whereas Southern Hemisphere watchers face a lower altitude and greater locating difficulty. Telescopes remain necessary for viewing. The Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking project discovered this celestial body on 15 March 2002, establishing a short orbital period of 4.2 years linked directly to the Alpha Capricornids meteor shower that peaks during late July.

Trajectory of 161P/Hartley–IRAS offers southern sky views

Between September and December 2026, comet 161P/Hartley–IRAS crosses the night sky with a brightness between magnitudes 10 and 14, providing optimal early conditions for viewers situated across the Southern Hemisphere. Closest proximity to Earth takes place on 2 October 2026, coming ahead of its perihelion scheduled for 27 November 2026 at magnitude 13.4.

Astronomer Malcolm Hartley discovered the object on 4 November 1983 using detections from the infrared satellite IRAS, which confirmed a 21-year periodic orbit classified within the Halley comet family.

Binocular visibility expected during passage of 2P/Encke

Comet 2P/Encke hits magnitude 6 between late January and mid-February 2027, enabling skywatchers in both hemispheres to spot it using standard binoculars. Maximum orbital approach to Earth occurs on 3 February 2027 before perihelion on 10 February 2027. Pierre Méchain found the object on 17 January 1786 and Johann Franz Encke calculated its motion in 1819, documenting the shortest orbital period among tracked comets at 3.3 years around the Sun.
