Developers also added direct compatibility for the Apple Pencil stylus accessory, marking the arrival of input pen integration on Apple smartphones. Standard retail models across the existing handset catalog continue to exclude this stylus interaction.
New multitasking tools built for the foldable hardware
While the mobile operating system has restricted background applications from running concurrently since the arrival of iOS 4, this updated architecture enables two active programs to run side by side across the unfolded interior display without using Stage Manager floating windows. The layout borrows functional split mechanics from the iPad operating system to organize work areas across the folding seam.
Users can preserve the primary Home Screen on one segment of the folding glass while running a separate utility on the adjacent half. The interface simplifies window selection by dividing the workspace into distinct halves. This software distribution utilizes the complete physical dimension of the primary folding panel.
Apple shifted the standard status bar icons from the top rim to the right edge of the screen panel. Network reception meters, Wi-Fi connectivity signals, and remaining battery levels now occupy this lateral stripe alongside the Dock and Dynamic Island modules.
Folding the device into an angled posture triggers an automatic relocation of input keyboards and controls to the lower glass while video media continues playing on the elevated half. Internal hinge sensors adjust graphic elements away from the center fold line to keep touch targets accessible. The device works as a clock.
External screen activates dedicated camera capabilities
The external glass panel accommodates capture tools designed for the folding chassis, including an automated Smart Take utility that captures photographs whenever machine vision detects body postures. This software automation removes the requirement for manual shutter presses or countdown timers while the secondary screen serves as an active viewfinder for the rear lenses.
The Kid Cue setting projects Snoopy animations across the outer panel to direct children toward the primary camera cluster, adopting an approach comparable to the Made You Look tool on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Video sessions inside the FaceTime application simultaneously stream footage gathered by the front and rear cameras. Both video perspectives transmit across active calls.
The iPhone Duo omits the manual camera controls and variable aperture lenses found on the iPhone 18 Pro.
