Independent cartographers and enthusiasts tracking Grand Theft Auto VI updated an interactive map of the fictional state of Leonida, enabling the public to explore Vice City locations ahead of the title’s commercial debut. The digital tool incorporates video clips and official stills released by developer Rockstar Games, pinning each sequence directly to its estimated geographic coordinates across the virtual territory.

The system gathers spatial data reconstructed through community analysis without access to proprietary cartographic files from publisher Take-Two Interactive. Rockstar Games outlined the narrative premise of the upcoming release in an official synopsis: “Vice City, USA. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Cartographic tool matches trailer footage to city landmarks

The interactive platform integrates video segments from promotional trailers alongside official screenshots, positioning them directly onto corresponding city landmarks to illustrate how urban environments will appear in the game. On Tuesday (22), the project gained renewed attention following the release of Version 16, an update that refines coastlines, beaches, industrial corridors, secondary alleys, and the structural perimeter of the Leonida Penitentiary based on recent visual footage.

The cartographic framework relies on a coordinate grid measuring 21,000 by 20,000 units, structured in sections of one square kilometer. This system enables researchers to calculate street dimensions, sightlines, and building heights by cross-referencing background architectural features against actual promotional clips.

Six distinct territories form the virtual state

Through visual triangulation and leaked development metrics, the collaborative effort identified six primary geographic sectors that compose the state of Leonida. Each zone presents unique environmental and architectural profiles designed to emulate regions of Florida.

The identified regions include:

  • Vice City, the central metropolitan hub inspired by Miami
  • Leonida Keys, an archipelago chain based on the Florida Keys
  • Grassrivers, a wetland reserve modeled after the Everglades
  • Port Gellhorn, a secondary urban and industrial port settlement
  • Ambrosia, a rural inland agricultural district
  • Mount Kalaga, an elevated territory located in the northern sector of the map

Cartographic project traces back to early production stages

The collaborative mapping effort began in early 2025 and has expanded to involve more than 16,000 contributors working across dedicated forums. The methodology mirrors historical efforts used by player communities prior to the launches of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, where enthusiasts successfully predicted final road networks by measuring camera angles, road signs, and sun positioning from promotional videos.

Earlier iterations of the map underwent major overhauls as new visual information surfaced. Version 13 was completed in June 2026, followed by Version 15 in August 2026, which incorporated background data from leaked development files before the release of Version 16 in September 2026.

Milestones of the fan mapping initiative

  • June 2026 — Release of Version 13, establishing the foundational layout of the metropolitan center
  • August 2026 — Publication of Version 15, integrating highway networks and suburban perimeters
  • September 20, 2026 — Distribution of Version 16, adding prison structures and industrial zones
  • September 22, 2026 — Interactive software updates with synchronized trailer footage markers
  • November 19, 2026 — Scheduled worldwide release of Grand Theft Auto VI

Unconfirmed legal actions and map accuracy

Take-Two Interactive, led by chief executive Strauss Zelnick, has not indicated whether it plans to pursue copyright removal requests against the independent cartography project. Additionally, the final precision of territorial borders, overall landmass scale, and mission objective locations cannot be verified until retail copies reach consumers.

Rockstar Games addressed the production schedule in an official announcement regarding the game’s launch window: “Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
