Sony added a free two-hour trial of the multiplayer survival title Rust: Console Edition to the PlayStation Plus Game Trials catalog in San Mateo, California. The trial became available on 9 September 2026 without formal promotional announcements from the platform holder or publisher Double Eleven, granting eligible members access to the full console release.
Subscribers to the highest tiers of the subscription service can download the build to play the complete experience with live online functionality. Double Eleven and Facepunch Studios outline the objective directly in the official PlayStation Store synopsis: “The Ultimate Survival Experience. The only aim in Rust is to survive.”
How does the PlayStation Plus trial work?
The time-limited trial gives players full access to every core feature of Rust: Console Edition for exactly 2 hours from the moment the software launches. Participants are dropped onto multiplayer maps with standard survival parameters, including resource collection, base construction, combat, and exploration under hostile conditions. During this two-hour testing window, players retain the ability to unlock trophies on their PlayStation Network profiles. If a user subsequently purchases the standard or expanded game, all accumulated save data, inventory states, and unlocked achievements automatically transfer to the permanent license.
Access requirements and regional distribution
The trial benefit belongs exclusively to the premium segment of Sony’s service tiers, varying by territory based on local infrastructure:
- PlayStation Plus Premium: Available in markets supporting cloud streaming, including North America and parts of Europe.
- PlayStation Plus Deluxe: Available in regions without cloud streaming support, including Brazil and broader Latin America.
- Included platforms: PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 digital storefronts.
- Session duration: Exactly 2 hours of active playtime per eligible user account.
- Multiplayer support: Online dedicated servers hosting 99 to 100 players simultaneously.
Multiplayer architecture and cross-platform restrictions
Rust: Console Edition operates on a distinct infrastructure model that separates players by console generation. PlayStation 5 users share dedicated servers with players on Xbox Series X/S, while PlayStation 4 users connect exclusively to legacy servers alongside Xbox One players. Neither console group can connect to PC servers, and cross-platform progression between personal computers and home consoles is not supported.
From early PC access to dedicated console release
Facepunch Studios originally created the survival game for PC, releasing the final version on 8 February 2018 after an extensive public development phase in early access. British studio Double Eleven subsequently assumed responsibility for rebuilding, optimizing, and operating the console adaptations, leading to the original release of Rust: Console Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 21 May 2021. The development teams expanded the game’s footprint further on 26 June 2025 by deploying a native hardware release specifically tailored for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Journalist Richard Breslin of GAMINGbible noted the addition on 23 September 2026, highlighting that the trial arrived quietly without traditional promotional campaigns or social media alerts. Sony, Facepunch Studios, and Double Eleven have not released a public statement explaining the decision to bypass standard marketing channels for the trial launch.
