Two violent shooting rampages at commercial establishments in Gauteng and the Western Cape left at least 27 people dead and 26 others injured across South Africa. The deadly episodes unfolded within a span of just a few hours between Saturday night (26) and the early morning hours of Sunday, September 27, 2026.
In the initial incident, eight attackers carrying AK-47 assault rifles and pistols stormed a crowded tavern in the mining community of Wedela, situated roughly 80 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. A second coordinated assault targeted patrons at a shisanyama outdoor grilled meat and entertainment venue in Lwandle, a township located on the outskirts of Cape Town.

The South African Police Service reported that 17 people lost their lives at the Wedela drinking establishment around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency medical personnel pronounced 13 men and four women deceased directly at the tavern grounds. Another 15 victims sustained critical gunshot injuries during the attack and were swiftly transported to regional hospitals for medical treatment.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko explained that customers were socializing both indoors and outdoors when the group arrived. “It is alleged that patrons were drinking inside and outside the tavern when the suspects arrived and opened fire on those outside. The suspects then entered the tavern and continued shooting at patrons inside,” the spokesperson confirmed in an official statement.
Before fleeing the area in two unidentified getaway vehicles, the gunmen searched customers, stole mobile phones, and set fire to two automobiles parked outside the tavern. Law enforcement authorities formally registered 17 murder dockets, 15 counts of attempted murder, and two cases of malicious damage to property in connection with the mass shooting.

Deadly assault targets patrons at Lwandle entertainment hub
Hours later, unidentified assailants raided a shisanyama, an entertainment space known for serving grilled meat, in the township of Lwandle. Ten people, comprising eight men and two women, were killed and 11 others sustained injuries during the early Sunday morning gunfire, prompting an immediate deployment of emergency services.
Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa provided the official toll from the site of the shooting. “Ten unidentified people, eight men and two women, were killed during a shooting at an entertainment venue in Lwandle after gunmen entered the establishment and fired indiscriminately at patrons on Sunday morning,” Potelwa declared. Paramedics confirmed five fatalities on the premises, while five additional victims succumbed to severe wounds after arriving at nearby hospitals.
