The universe of The Last of Us is expanding with two new narrative projects currently in active development to push the franchise beyond the storylines of Part I and Part II. The announcement came directly from Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann through an official studio communication issued from Santa Monica, California.

Both productions are in their initial planning phases at the studio. Druckmann shared the update during the conclusion of the annual The Last of Us Day festivities, an event commemorating September 26, 2013, the fictional calendar date when the Cordyceps brain infection first overwhelmed society in the original storyline.

Addressing the community, the director outlined the creative reasoning behind revisiting the post-apocalyptic universe. “We can’t say much right now. What I can say is that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II,” Druckmann stated. “The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling”.

Studio leadership keeps release formats and story details under wraps

Naughty Dog has not clarified whether these additions will take shape as full-fledged console releases, episodic spin-offs, or narrative ventures across other entertainment media. Key operational details such as official project titles, gameplay styles, casting announcements, and commercial launch windows remain undisclosed.

The possibility of expanding the franchise was first highlighted by Druckmann in the documentary Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, where he confirmed that a compelling conceptual outline had taken form. This current creative expansion follows Naughty Dog’s strategic cancellation of the standalone multiplayer game The Last of Us Online, an operational shift designed to focus internal talent on signature single-player narrative campaigns.

The original installment debuted in 2013 and collected over 200 Game of the Year honors across the industry. That story centered on Joel, a hardened survivor tasked with guiding 14-year-old Ellie through dangerous territory outside an authoritarian military quarantine zone.

Sci-fi adventure Intergalactic receives dedicated showcase window in 2027

Alongside its survival-horror commitments, Naughty Dog is advancing work on an original science-fiction intellectual property titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Actress Tati Gabrielle is attached to the project, starring as lead protagonist Jordan A. Mun in the upcoming cosmic adventure.

Studio leadership confirmed that the production team will maintain strict public silence regarding the sci-fi title for the remainder of 2026. “We want to set expectations: we’ll be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll do a full reveal of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure,” Druckmann stated.

The comprehensive reveal for the new intellectual property remains scheduled for 2027, with no commercial release date currently established. Meanwhile, the studio’s official community broadcast generated $11,000 in charitable contributions supporting the AbleGamers foundation.
