An armed man carrying a large blade climbed over the boundary wall of CMEI São Braz around 3:30 p.m. this Friday (9) and barricaded himself inside a classroom with captives. The municipal early childhood education center sits at 79 Genauro Ferreira de Almeida Street in the São Braz neighborhood of Curitiba, near the boundary line with Campo Largo.

Officers from the Military Police of Paraná quickly sealed off every access point leading to the campus once the emergency call arrived. Negotiators from the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE) took direct charge of crisis containment to secure the attacker’s peaceful surrender and preserve the lives of the hostages. Patrol squads from the Batalhão de Polícia de Rondas Ostensivas de Natureza Especial (BPRONE) reinforced the outer security cordon around the structure.

Special operations teams secure perimeter and verify captive numbers

Preliminary estimates regarding the total count of people held inside the room continue to show discrepancies among security authorities. Early assessments point to a group ranging from 10 to 25 hostages, which includes enrolled infants, classroom teachers, and school employees. Captain João Roberto Galeto Alves from BPRONE stated that initial operational reports indicated approximately 20 children were present in the compromised section of the building.

School workers managed to safely guide a substantial number of pupils and staff members out of the educational center during the opening seconds of the trespassing incident. The immediate police mobilization prompted rapid safety measures across adjacent residential blocks. Administrators at a neighboring municipal primary school promptly instructed guardians to pick up their children so the adjacent grounds could be fully emptied.

Municipal support teams mobilize as hostage standoff continues

Personnel from the Municipal Department of Education alongside social assistance teams deployed directly to the scene to assist impacted families. Municipal psychologists and social workers established a dedicated receiving station outside the barricaded perimeter to assist relatives and educators awaiting updates.

Municipal authorities issued an official statement outlining their ongoing operational monitoring: “The Municipal Department of Education has been following the situation since the beginning and has mobilized its teams to provide all necessary support to the children, professionals, and families. The absolute priority at this moment is the preservation of life and the physical integrity of everyone involved”.

Public safety authorities reported no physical injuries inside the facility throughout the early hours of the intervention. The suspect’s identity and the underlying motives driving the school breach remain under active review by law enforcement, while BOPE tactical squads sustain their containment position on October 9, 2026.
