How the Philadelphia Eagles enter the game

Head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion will rely on backup quarterback Tanner McKee as the starter this Sunday. Starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was ruled out on Thursday (15) after medical exams performed on Wednesday (14) detected movement of a superficial blood clot in his calf, resulting from being stepped on against the Los Angeles Rams on October 4. Across six career NFL games and two previous starts, McKee has completed 54 of 88 passes (61.4%) for 597 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, making his first start outside of a Week 18 finale.

“As a backup quarterback, that’s the mindset you have to have. At any moment, you have to be ready to play on a Sunday. It could be the first play, it could be the last play. It’s kind of a luxury for me to have the ‘1’ (starter) reps in practice and just running the meetings or whatever it is. It’s kind of a luxury for me as a backup to have a week to prepare like that,” said Tanner McKee. Addressing the team’s 2-3 record, Nick Sirianni stated: “You’ll never get me making any excuse for anything. Our job is to find ways to win regardless and that’s what we’re working on doing. That what we’re trying to do. Obviously, at this point, we’ve lost more than we’ve won, so we haven’t done a good enough job.”

After listing 24 players on Wednesday’s initial injury report, Philadelphia had six athletes sit out Thursday’s practice: running backs Saquon Barkley (hamstring) and Will Shipley (partial plantar fascia tear in the foot), defensive back Michael Carter II (abdomen), edge rushers Jalyx Hunt (knee/ankle) and A.J. Epenesa (back), and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring). Wide receivers DeVonta Smith (hamstring/toe) and Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown (ankle), center Drew Kendall (knee), and guard Tyler Steen (shoulder) practiced on a limited basis on Thursday, alongside players with open return windows: guard Landon Dickerson (knee), cornerback Jakorian Bennett (knee), and tight ends Grant Calcaterra (back) and Eli Stowers (quadriceps).

Philadelphia’s depth chart lists an offensive base of Tanner McKee (QB), Saquon Barkley or Dameon Pierce (RB), DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, and Makai Lemon (WRs), Dallas Goedert (TE), Jordan Mailata (LT), Willie Lampkin (LG), Drew Kendall or Jake Majors (C), Tyler Steen (RG), and Markel Bell (RT). On defense, the listed starters are Jalyx Hunt or Jonathan Greenard and Nolan Smith Jr. (EDGE), Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo (DTs), Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell (LBs), and Riq Woolen, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean (CBs). Final game status designations and the official inactive list are confirmed after Friday’s practice and 90 minutes before kickoff.

How the Carolina Panthers enter the game

Led by head coach Dave Canales, offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, the Carolina Panthers placed starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, along with wide receiver Xavier Legette, on Injured Reserve. Consequently, Will Lee III and Akayleb Evans move into the starting cornerback spots, while John Metchie III enters the starting wide receiver group alongside Tetairoa McMillan, who recorded 14 receptions on 16 targets for 192 yards and two touchdowns against Detroit in Week 4.

Starting quarterback Bryce Young (knee) and wide receiver Jalen Coker (quadriceps) practiced in full and are cleared for Sunday. Rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling (knee), outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips (hamstring), guard Damien Lewis (elbow), and tight ends Tommy Tremble (ribs) and Darren Waller (toe) were limited participants on Thursday, while running back AJ Dillon (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday. Carolina also opened the 21-day practice window for right tackle Taylor Moton (lung/blood clot), defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (neck), and running back Trevor Etienne (ankle); all three practiced in full but remain on Injured Reserve until officially activated.

Carolina’s official Week 6 depth chart features an offense with Bryce Young (QB), Chuba Hubbard (RB), Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, and John Metchie III (WRs), Tommy Tremble (TE), Rasheed Walker (LT), Damien Lewis (LG), Luke Fortner (C), Robert Hunt (RG), and Monroe Freeling (RT). The defense lists Bobby Brown III, Lee Hunter, and Derrick Brown (DL), Patrick Jones II and Jaelan Phillips (OLB), Devin Lloyd and Bobby Okereke (LB), Akayleb Evans and Will Lee III (CB), and Tre’von Moehrig and Nick Scott (Safeties).

Commenting on Hurts’ absence, outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips said: “I wish he wasn’t out. I like competing against great players. And Tanner is a great player, too, but I was excited to play against Jalen.” Linebacker Devin Lloyd also spoke about facing Philadelphia: “Since I have been in the league they have been to two Super Bowls and won one, so this is a team that knows how to win.”
