Developer and modder nicklovin99 has released an early access modification titled enRAGE – Living World and Nemesis System for the PC version of Rockstar Games’ open-world western Red Dead Redemption 2. Uploaded to the Nexus Mods platform on Saturday (17) and updated to version 0.9.5 on Sunday (18), the file overhauls the single-player Story Mode by adapting the enemy memory and vengeance mechanics popularized by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The system places 8 armed factions into autonomous territorial conflicts across the map while assigning 7 distinct temperaments to non-playable characters (NPCs).

On the official project page, nicklovin99 explained that the modification is designed to turn ordinary passersby into persistent rivals for protagonist Arthur Morgan. “Every NPC gets a name, a temper and a mind shaped by a life lived before you rode in. They remember what you did and will cross your path again. Some will like you, some will fear you, some will want you dead,” the creator stated in the release notes. To accompany the launch, a gameplay trailer edited in the style of official Rockstar Games promotional videos was released with voiceover narration by Sarah Kempton.

Personal histories, seven temperaments, and the X-ray injury menu

Whenever the player greets a stranger in Red Dead Redemption 2 with enRAGE installed, the software generates a permanent profile for that individual in a dedicated in-game menu. Each resident receives a full name, occupation, religious faith, family ties, personal quirks—such as being a gambler, a drunk, a traitor, or a family man—and a chronological backstory dated to in-game years prior to meeting Arthur Morgan. These generated histories can include having fought in the Civil War, surviving the financial Panic of ’93, serving a sentence in Sisika Penitentiary, or working as a laborer in the Annesburg coal mines and the Saint Denis docks.

Alongside their biography, every NPC is assigned one of seven behavioral temperaments: Hothead, Proud, Cold, Coward, Greedy, Loyal, or Drifter. This core trait dictates how the character fights, whether they back down from a confrontation, how they respond to dialogue, and whether they forgive a transgression or seek retaliation.

A hidden numerical score continuously tracks how each inhabitant perceives Arthur Morgan based on his actions in the world. Friendly greetings and defusing bar fights improve the score, whereas insults, fistfights, armed robberies, hogtying, horse theft, and killing a character’s associates push the hostility meter upward. As animosity increases, the rival progresses through three hostility tiers—Resentful, Vengeful, and Murderous—scaling up their weaponry from bare fists to firearms as they actively hunt the player across towns and trails. Wearing a mask or bandana during a crime prevents the target from identifying Arthur Morgan and stops a personal grudge from forming, provided no witness sees his uncovered face.

“Rob a man, beat him or insult him, and he may not forget. He gets a name, a temper, a life story and a grudge, and one day he comes looking for you,” nicklovin99 wrote in the project overview. If an enemy is shot during a gunfight and survives, they can return in future encounters bearing visible scars, walking with a permanent limp, or suffering from partial paralysis. Players can inspect these long-term physical conditions through a built-in X-ray menu page, which displays the skeletal structure and permanent trauma carried by each tracked NPC. When a rival is killed, their surviving relatives and friends can learn who committed the murder, hold a funeral for the deceased, and inherit the blood feud against the player.

Procedural turf wars, prisoner interrogations, and autonomous town life

Beyond individual vendettas, enRAGE introduces unscripted territorial warfare among eight major armed outfits and the U.S. Army. The active combat factions include the O’Driscoll Boys, the Lemoyne Raiders, the Murfree Brood, the Skinner Brothers, and the Bronte Family, while the mod’s broader hierarchy menus also categorize the Wapiti people, The Klan, the Van der Linde gang, and unaffiliated civilians. Each warring organization maintains its own leader, officer corps, rank-and-file members, camps, financial treasuries, supply lines, and controlled territory.

These groups initiate turf wars, set up roadblocks, rob stagecoaches, and negotiate or break peace treaties independently of the player’s storyline progression. If an officer or gang boss is killed in battle, another member rises through the ranks to fill the vacancy. Players can tip the balance of a regional conflict by sneaking into enemy hideouts, burning supply wagons, robbing strongboxes, or assassinating captains until an outfit’s war effort collapses.

During skirmishes, Arthur Morgan can wound an opponent and hold them at gunpoint to open a specialized interrogation menu. Questioning a captive can reveal the location of a gang leader’s hideout, hidden loot, or an officer’s routine—such as learning which nights a specific captain drinks at a saloon in Rhodes—though hostile prisoners may intentionally lie to lure the player into an ambush. Players can also use telegraph offices to send wires that threaten rivals or broker truces. All major events are logged in an in-game living chronicle, with major battles and crimes appearing in local newspaper editions. Additionally, a dedicated World tab tracks autonomous daily interactions among townsfolk, recording as NPCs adopt stray dogs, recover from alcoholism, or start independent feuds with one another in a simulation style compared to the colony management game RimWorld.

How Warner Bros.’ 2021 patent restricted the original Nemesis mechanic

The dynamic rivalry framework adapted by enRAGE originated with developer Monolith Productions and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in the action-adventure titles Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. In those releases, orc soldiers who defeated the player or escaped combat remembered the encounter, taunted the protagonist upon meeting again, and climbed their army’s internal hierarchy.

Despite widespread praise from players and game designers, similar hierarchy and memory mechanics rarely appeared in commercial releases from competing studios. In 2021, Warner Bros. secured an official United States patent covering the Nemesis System’s core architecture, legally restricting other commercial video game publishers from replicating the procedural hierarchy and grudge structure without a license.

Technical specifications and installation requirements for PC

Because enRAGE operates as an unofficial, free community modification rather than a commercial product, it functions exclusively on the PC edition of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players interested in testing the early access build must configure their game directory with external script libraries before launching the campaign:

  • Official modification title: enRAGE – Living World and Nemesis System (created by nicklovin99)
  • Platform and mode compatibility: Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC (restricted to single-player Story Mode; incompatible with Red Dead Online)
  • Initial early access release: Saturday, October 17, 2026, via Nexus Mods
  • Latest available patch: Version 0.9.5, uploaded on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 5:57 p.m.
  • Required prerequisite software: ScriptHookRDR2 (developed by Alexander Blade) and ScriptHookRDR2DotNet V2 (version 2.2.0 or higher)
  • Development assistance tool: Script and system architecture assisted by Claude Code artificial intelligence

In the technical documentation on Nexus Mods, the creator included a disclosure regarding the software tools used to build the project: “AI Transparency – Claude Code assisted in creation of scripts and systems,” nicklovin99 noted. Because the modification links multiple procedural databases—spanning NPC biographies, faction economies, and skeletal injury tracking—in an early access environment, the developer warns that technical bugs and stability glitches are expected during gameplay. As of the version 0.9.5 update on October 18, 2026, nicklovin99 has not announced a target release date for version 1.0 of the enRAGE mod.
