Homebrew developer and PlayStation 5 security researcher Gezine demonstrated a new jailbreak on PlayStation 5 firmware 14.10, the exact system software version required to run Grand Theft Auto VI. The breach occurs less than a month before Rockstar Games releases the title on November 19, 2026, raising concerns within the industry regarding unauthorized file extraction and piracy ahead of an unconfirmed PC version targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

Gezine bypassed the security protections of the 14.10 system update, which Sony released on October 1, 2026, and shared evidence showing access to the console’s debug settings and kernel level. Datamining conducted by the PlayStation Game Size profile confirmed that the launch build of Grand Theft Auto VI will require at least firmware version 14.10 to start on Sony’s console.

Technical limitations of the PlayStation 5 firmware 14.10 exploit

Despite achieving kernel-level access and unlocking the debug menu on firmware 14.10, the new jailbreak carries technical restrictions that currently prevent full game piracy or unofficial PC ports. The standard method used to bypass the console’s hypervisor—a security layer that must be defeated to extract game files, create backups, and execute unauthorized copies of software—does not yet function on version 14.10. In addition, Gezine decided to keep the exploit files private and withhold them from the public for now, a move that prevents Sony from immediately issuing a mandatory system patch to close the vulnerability before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives in stores.

Sony has actively updated its system software in recent months to counter hardware modifications and unauthorized code execution. Following the release of firmware 14.00 on September 16, 2026, which began blocking earlier exploits known as Relapse and Byepervisor Reborn that worked up to July’s firmware 13.60, the company restricted PlayStation Network (PSN) logins in mid-October 2026. Consoles running software older than version 14.10 are now blocked from accessing online features and network services.

Rockstar Games PC release strategy and 2027 launch window

The ongoing attempts to breach PlayStation 5 security

have intensified discussions surrounding the absence of a simultaneous PC launch for Grand Theft Auto VI. According to a report published on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, based on four anonymous industry sources, Rockstar Games plans to release the PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI in the first quarter of 2027, placing the launch window between January and March 2027.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick explained the company’s staggered platform approach in May 2026, noting that a major franchise release “always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”

At the same time, Zelnick acknowledged the growing financial weight of computer gaming, stating that the broader market is “moving towards PC and business is moving towards open rather than closed.” According to the executive, the PC platform can account for 45% to 50% of total sales on certain titles.

Historical console-to-PC intervals and GTA Online revenue data

A first-quarter 2027 arrival on PC would represent a significantly shorter wait than players experienced with Rockstar Games’ two previous flagship titles. Grand Theft Auto V debuted on consoles in September 2013 and took approximately 19 months to reach PC in April 2015, while Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in October 2018 before arriving on PC in November 2019. Analytical data previously leaked by the group ShinyHunters also illustrates why console editions remain the studio’s primary commercial focus: while PC players represented 11% of weekly active users in GTA Online, they generated only 3% of net bookings, averaging about $0.30 per user per week compared to $1.29 per user per week on the PlayStation 5.

Neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company Take-Two Interactive has officially announced a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI or commented on the reported first-quarter 2027 window. It also remains unconfirmed whether Gezine will publicly release the firmware 14.10 exploit files or if security researchers will achieve a complete hypervisor bypass before digital preloads begin on Thursday, November 12, 2026.
