Developer Arc System Works confirmed that Phoenix Cyclops will arrive as the first downloadable content character for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2, 2026. The fighter opens the Year 1 Pass roster for the 4v4 tag-team title on PlayStation 5 and PC, introducing a combat mechanic that trades health for temporary power.
Voiced in English by actor Ray Chase, who previously portrayed Scott Summers in the animated series X-Men ’97 and the game Marvel Rivals, the character moves away from traditional iterations of the mutant leader. According to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls producer Takeshi Yamanaka, Scott Summers was originally a leading candidate for the base roster as part of the Unbreakable X-Men team, but the developers opted to hold him back to rework his established fighting game identity. “During those discussions, our narrative team proposed the idea of using the Phoenix version of Cyclops. We felt this interpretation would allow us to create fresher visuals and a more exciting fighting style while offering something unexpected for players,” Yamanaka said.
Phoenix Cyclops mechanics and Dark Phoenix transformation
In battle, Phoenix Cyclops functions as an all-rounder capable of fighting at both close and long range. His moveset combines standard projectile and setup tools with wide-area pyrokinetic attacks derived from the cosmic Phoenix Force. “Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder who excels at both long-range combat and close-range strikes through his versatile use of Optic Blasts,” Yamanaka explained.
The character’s design and core gameplay loop draw directly from the 2012 comic book storyline Avengers vs. X-Men, in which Scott Summers joined the Phoenix Five group before absorbing the cosmic powers of his teammates. Within the game, landing Optic Blast techniques builds a specific resource meter composed of Phoenix Force energy. Collecting enough of this energy allows the player to trigger a mid-match transformation into Dark Phoenix, altering the character from an idealistic leader into a corrupted state. “Entering Dark Phoenix form grants a significant temporary power boost, but it also comes with risks, including health depletion,” Yamanaka stated.

Costume options and PlayStation Store promotions
Because the base downloadable version of Scott Summers uses a younger visual appearance paired with the Phoenix Five armor, the development team prepared traditional outfits for release on the same day. Yamanaka noted that players who grew up with comic books and animated adaptations often prefer familiar designs. “Because of that, whenever we significantly reinterpret a character’s design or choose a relatively uncommon version of a character, we approach development with the expectation that classic-inspired costumes should also be available,” the producer said.

To prepare for the arrival of the first DLC fighter, the publisher initiated the first digital price promotion for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on the PlayStation Store on October 7, 2026, which included a discount on the Ultimate Edition. Standalone pricing for Phoenix Cyclops and his Classic and Legacy costumes for players who do not own the Year 1 Pass or the Ultimate Edition has not yet been officially disclosed.
August 2026 launch and technical updates on PC
Developed in Tokyo, Japan, by Arc System Works—the studio behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ—in partnership with PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched globally on August 6, 2026. Directed by chief battle designer Kazuto Sekine, the game debuted on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam with a base roster of 20 fighters and full cross-play support across platforms. At launch in August 2026, the PC version experienced technical issues and CPU performance bottlenecks, prompting producer Takeshi Yamanaka to issue a public apology to players while the team deployed emergency corrective patches ahead of the November 2, 2026 content expansion.
