Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios presented the details of the Rot and Ruin update for the survival game Grounded 2 on Tuesday (20). Identified as version 0.6.0, the content patch expands the map of Brookhollow Park with the new Woodpile adventure area, introduces the Centipede boss, and adds the Potato Beetle mount alongside a base painting system and Bismuth equipment upgrades.

Shyla Schofield, Senior Communications Manager at Obsidian Entertainment, detailed the scope of the new content in the official announcement released at 16:15 BRT. “Brookhollow Park is getting a little more rotten. The Rot and Ruin update expands Grounded 2 with a new area to explore, dangerous creatures to face, another buggy to ride, and new ways to customize both your gear and your home away from home,” Schofield stated.

The Rot and Ruin expansion alters the geography of Brookhollow Park by introducing Woodpile, a sector characterized by towering structures and winding passages that shelter returning insects with modified behaviors. Termites return to the franchise across multiple categories, including Workers, Soldiers, the Termite King, and new O.G.R.R. variants, all programmed with new attack patterns as players advance deeper into their territory.

Beyond the termite colonies, the Woodpile sector serves as the habitat for the Centipede, a multi-legged boss creature that had been among the additions most requested by the player community. Defeating or interacting with the content surrounding the new boss unlocks a specific character mutation, an equippable trinket, and themed furniture pieces for base decoration.

Combat and traversal receive a new option with the arrival of the Potato Beetle buggy, a mount larger than the existing Ladybug buggy and designed for close-quarters engagements. The insect can fire bursts of projectiles at targets directly in front of it, activate a Healing Roar ability to keep players alive during fights, and haul building materials and resources across the park for construction projects.

Base customization and combat progression also expand through two new crafting mechanics introduced in the Rot and Ruin update. Players can now manufacture paint and apply color layers to walls, floors, roofs, stairs, doors, and other structures using a paintball weapon called the Splotcher, while weapons and armor can be upgraded to higher tiers at the new Yoking Press station by collecting and refining Bismuth, a resource linked to the Raw Science forces beneath the park.

Exploration across Brookhollow Park is further supplemented by secondary collectibles and interface items distributed throughout the map. The content package adds new SCA.B color themes, collectible miniatures, and additional field stations for survivors to locate.

Grounded 2 development timeline and previous updates

The official presentation of the Rot and Ruin package follows a two-week public testing cycle and continues the post-launch roadmap established since the survival title entered early access in mid-2025. The English promotional material originally used the headline “100 Reasons to Run in the Rot and Ruin Update” as a pun on the Centipede’s 100 legs, whereas the official Brazilian Portuguese localization adapted the title to focus on reasons to play the update.

The chronological milestones of the game’s releases and test builds are listed below:

  • July 29, 2025: Initial launch of Grounded 2 in Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access
  • August 11, 2026: Release of the previous major content update, Into the Abyss
  • October 6, 2026, at 11:50: Launch of the Public Test Build (PTB) 0.6.0 for the Rot and Ruin update
  • October 20, 2026, at 16:15 BRT: Official publication of the Rot and Ruin update details by Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios

While the Public Test Build 0.6.0 has been accessible since early October, the studios stated that the final version of Rot and Ruin will arrive in the main game soon, with the complete 1.0 launch of Grounded 2 remaining scheduled for 2027.
