A viral theory claims that The Simpsons predicted a global blackout for November 17, 2026. The idea spread on social media after posts linked the animated series to a real federal exercise scheduled for the same day. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have announced only a preventive test of emergency signals for radio and television stations, with no effect on generators, cables or electricity distribution.

The misleading posts began with screenshots designed to look like corporate statements, urging users to rewatch the final moments of a fictional episode. The alarm worried residents in several countries and raised questions about possible failures in essential services. One screenshot dated November 1, 2026, showed a post with about 768,400 views when it was recorded.

The episode behind the conspiracy is “It’s a Blunderful Life,” the seventh chapter of the series’ 35th season, first aired on November 19, 2023. In the story, Springfield loses power after an accident at the nuclear plant run by Mr. Burns sets off a reactor failure alarm. The plot centers on loyalty and family conflict, with Homer Simpson blamed by the town. It makes no reference to global blackouts, international transmission lines or any calendar tied to 2026.

Why November 17 appears in a real federal alert schedule

The date gained traction because it matches the regular schedule of the Emergency Alert System (EAS), the national public warning network in the United States. Federal law requires authorities to run a full check of national communication channels at least once every three years. The routine exercise involves sound messages and on-screen text on broadcast channels only.

The guidelines of the federal procedure set out the steps that authorized broadcasters must take. The transmission is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time, which is 4:20 p.m. in Brasília. Mobile phones will not receive the message, and stations must file test reports in the FCC’s EAS Test Reporting System within 48 hours.

  • The signal will last about one minute on radio, free-to-air TV, cable and satellite operators.
  • Screens and audio will display notices stating that the procedure is only a federal technical test.
  • The official notice will say that civilians do not need to take any preventive or protective action.
  • If severe storms hit the United States on the planned date, the exercise moves to December 3, 2026.

Reporting rules and the long record of Simpsons predictions

The Simpsons, on air for more than three decades, has built a reputation for supposed predictions, and viral posts often cut scenes out of context to attribute catastrophic forecasts to the show. The 2023 episode used a city blackout only as a comic device. It has no functional link to the maintenance schedule of US telecommunications infrastructure.
