Nissan made its expansion plans in the competitive Indian market official with the confirmation of the launch of a new seven-seater minivan, called Gravite. The model, which is part of a broad product offensive from the Renault-Nissan alliance, seeks to combine the practicality of a family vehicle with a robust design inspired by SUVs, a trending segment in the region.

The development of Gravite is a direct result of the platform sharing strategy with Renault. The vehicle will be built on the CMF-A+ architecture, the same one used in the successful Renault Triber, which allows it to optimize production costs and accelerate the arrival of the new model at dealerships. Manufacturing will be concentrated at the alliance’s industrial complex in Chennai.

Scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026, the Gravite minivan will play a key role in Nissan’s plans to diversify its portfolio into Índia. The brand aims to capitalize on the growing demand for spacious and versatile family vehicles, offering an alternative with its own visual identity and the Japanese automaker’s seal of quality.

A robust design to differentiate

To ensure that the Gravite is not just seen as a rebranded version of the Renault Triber, Nissan has invested in a completely new and unique design project. The proposal is to give the model a more imposing and adventurous appearance, in line with the brand’s global visual language. Elementos as wider fenders, plastic coatings on the wheel arches and a greater height in relation to the ground are expected to reinforce this identity.

The front of the vehicle will be one of the main highlights, featuring a prominent V-Motion grille and the new Nissan emblem in the center. The LED headlights will have a distinct light signature, while the bumper will adopt a more aggressive shape. At the rear, the “C” shaped lanterns and a cleaner, more modern design should complete the look, significantly distancing it from its “cousin” the Renault and bringing it closer to other SUVs in the Nissan line.

Interior focused on versatility and comfort

The biggest attraction of the Nissan Gravite will be its spacious and modular cabin, designed to accommodate up to seven passengers in comfort. The internal layout will prioritize functionality, with intelligent solutions to optimize space and facilitate access to the third row of seats, an essential feature for larger families.

The Japanese brand must equip the model with superior quality finishing materials and an equipment list focused on technology and convenience. Espera has a digital instrument panel, a multimedia center with a touch screen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as dedicated air conditioning outlets for the rear passengers.

The modularity of the seats will be a differentiator, allowing different configurations to transport passengers and cargo. The second row of seats will likely slide and recline, while the third could be folded down or even removed, creating a spacious trunk for longer trips.

Alliance strategy for the Indian market

The launch of the Gravite is just the first step in a robust investment plan from the Renault-Nissan alliance to the Índia. The strategy, announced at the beginning of the year, foresees the introduction of a series of new models to strengthen the presence of both brands in key segments of the local market.

In addition to the seven-seater minivan, Nissan plans to launch an all-new compact SUV, which will share its underpinnings with the next-generation Renault Duster. Este model has the mission of competing in one of the hottest segments in the country, taking advantage of the brand’s reputation in sports utility vehicles.

A third vehicle, a larger SUV, is also in the plans and should hit the market around 2027. Esse model will be positioned in a higher price range, targeting an audience that seeks more sophistication, technology and performance.

This product offensive demonstrates the alliance’s commitment to transforming Índia into a strategic production and export hub, taking advantage of the installed capacity of the Chennai factory to meet both domestic demand and other emerging markets.

Engine and performance

Under the hood, the Nissan Gravite is expected to be equipped with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine, capable of generating approximately 72 horsepower and 96 Nm of torque. Este engine is known for its fuel efficiency, a crucial factor for Indian consumers, and for offering performance suitable for predominantly urban use.

For transmission, the Nissan will offer two options: a five-speed manual transmission and an automated transmission (AMT), also with five speeds. The AMT option is particularly valued in large Indian cities, as it provides greater comfort in heavy traffic without the high cost of a conventional automatic transmission. The CMF-A+ platform is designed to offer a good balance between ride comfort and stability, even on poor road conditions.

The CMF-A+ platform as the basis of the project

The use of the modular CMF-A+ platform (Common Module Family) is a central pillar in the alliance’s strategy. Essa architecture was developed specifically for emerging markets, allowing the creation of vehicles with competitive production costs, high versatility and a good level of safety. Sua flexibility makes it possible to build different types of bodies on the same base, from hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs and minivans, as is the case with the Gravite. The structure was designed to optimize internal space, ensuring a spacious cabin even in vehicles with compact external dimensions, a feature that will be fundamental to the success of the new Nissan minivan.

Market positioning

The Nissan Gravite will be positioned to compete directly with models such as the Renault Triber and the segment leader, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Nissan’s strategy will be to highlight the exclusive design, construction quality and a potentially more extensive list of equipment to attract consumers.

Price will be a deciding factor, and the Gravite is expected to be launched at a competitive price, slightly above the Triber, to justify its superior design and finishing features.

Release forecast and expectations

Production of the Nissan Gravite is scheduled to begin at the Chennai factory, with the official launch on the Indian market scheduled for March 2026. The arrival of the model is eagerly awaited as it represents the revitalization of the Nissan product line into the Índia.

The success of the Gravite is vital to the automaker’s growth plans in the region, paving the way for future SUV launches and consolidating the position of the Renault-Nissan alliance as a relevant force in the world’s third largest automotive market.
