China records a thousand canceled flights and flooding due to Typhoon Dolphin with winds of 150 km/h

Typhoon Dolphin’s passage through the city of Shanghai, China’s second largest population center, generated strong storms that resulted in flooding and the suspension of almost a thousand flights on August 10, 2026.

Chinese state television reported that Shanghai’s two airports recorded 943 cancellations, representing about 40% of flight operations. These interruptions were caused by wind gusts that reached speeds of 151 km/h.

Images that circulated widely on August 9 showed the moment when the storm caused a truck to overturn in the city of Wenzhou, located in Zhejiang province. The driver’s condition after the incident was not disclosed.

Several roads in Shanghai were taken over by water, even reaching the main commercial areas of the metropolis. Video records show residents facing the murky current, with the water level reaching knee height.

Trader Hou Lina, 39, expressed her surprise at the scale of the event, stating: “It rained almost all night yesterday. When I woke up this morning, I found the neighborhood flooded and the streets completely flooded. I have lived in Shanghai for 10 years and this is the first time I have faced so much inconvenience caused by a typhoon. It is the first time I have encountered such widespread flooding.”

In Shanghai’s Jinshan district, local authorities recommended the temporary suspension of activities for non-essential businesses and organizations. Schools, outdoor events and transport services were also affected, in anticipation of even stronger winds and heavy rain forecast for August 10.

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall on the east coast of China on August 9, 2026, with the first impact recorded near Yuhuan, Zhejiang province.

Before reaching Shanghai, the phenomenon had already caused damage in Okinawa Prefecture, located in southern Japan, resulting in six injuries and leaving more than 50,000 properties without electricity.

Considered the most intense typhoon to hit Chinese territory this year, Dolphin is expected to continue towards the interior of the country. Its track points toward the central provinces of Hubei and Henan in the coming days, bringing moisture north.

In the capital Beijing, there is an expectation of “significant rain” starting on August 11th and lasting until August 13th. In response, local authorities issued warnings about the risk of flash floods and landslides in nearby mountainous regions.
