Jannik Sinner secured his spot in the China Open semifinals on Monday, defeating Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 7-5 in Beijing. The world number two Italian clinched his third consecutive semifinal at the ATP 500 event in just 1 hour and 19 minutes at the National Tennis Center. In the women’s draw, top seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the round of 16 when Colombia’s Camila Osorio retired injured after losing the first set 6-0. The matches highlighted strong performances in the Asian Swing’s premier hard-court tournament.

Other players also progressed in the WTA 1000 event. Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Russia’s Mirra Andreeva reached the last 16, setting up potential blockbuster clashes later in the tournament.

  • Kostyuk defeated Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 6-2.
  • Andreeva, the fourth seed, outplayed Spain’s Jessica Bouzas 6-4, 6-1.

These results keep both players in contention for deeper runs.

Sinner’s commanding performance

Sinner dominated the first set, dropping just one game with precise serving and aggressive baseline play. Marozsan, ranked 57th, fought back in the second set, briefly leading 5-4 after a break, but Sinner rallied, winning three straight games while conceding only one point.

The Italian now faces third seed Alex de Minaur, against whom he holds a perfect 10-0 head-to-head record. Their most recent clash was a straight-sets win for Sinner at the Cincinnati Masters 1000.

Swiatek’s swift advance

Swiatek overwhelmed Osorio with relentless pressure, forcing errors to claim the first set in 32 minutes. Osorio’s injury-related retirement handed the Polish star a quick passage to the next round, where she meets American Emma Navarro.

Navarro earned her spot by defeating Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a two-hour battle. The American has now won three consecutive matches without dropping a deciding set.

Key moments in the women’s draw

Kostyuk showcased consistency, converting 80% of her first-serve points against Sasnovich. The Ukrainian, chasing her first WTA 1000 title, varied her pace to maintain control throughout.

Andreeva, at just 17, displayed maturity beyond her years, accelerating in the second set after a tight opener. Her win over Bouzas strengthens her case for a potential semifinal showdown with Kostyuk.

Tournament stakes and history

The China Open, held annually since 2004, offers up to $1.1 million for its champions. Sinner, a semifinalist in 2023 and 2024, is chasing his first Beijing title after securing other Masters 1000 crowns this year.

Swiatek, the 2023 champion, has won five WTA 1000 titles this season. With rivals like Aryna Sabalenka sidelined by injury, she aims to solidify her world number one ranking.

Prize money and rankings boost

Semifinalists in the men’s draw earn 330 ATP points and $300,000, with the champion taking 500 points and $685,000. These rewards are critical for the ATP Finals race.

In the women’s event, the round of 16 nets 110 WTA points and $50,000. Swiatek, targeting 1,000 points for the title, is fine-tuning her game against baseline players like Navarro.

The tournament continues until October 5, with quarterfinals set for Tuesday.
