The cross-buying system for games, known as cross-buy, could be on its way to the PlayStation 5 platform and the personal computer gaming ecosystem. The move comes after users and analysts identified a new icon and mentions of a “crossbuy-tag” in the PlayStation Store code files. This discovery suggests that Sony is preparing to allow players to purchase a title just once and use it on both platforms.

The functionality, if confirmed, would represent a significant change in the company’s game distribution strategy. Currently, purchasing a PS5 title does not automatically guarantee access to its PC version, requiring separate purchases. The evidence was initially published by the specialized portal Dealabs and reinforced by independent checks on the architecture of the digital store.

The find aroused great interest in the gamer community, which speculates about Sony’s approach to the model already adopted by competitors. The tag and cross-buy symbol were tracked internally, confirming the existence of the new graphic elements in the system.

Icon details and authenticity

The main discovery was made by a user who shared images of the icon found in the PS Store archives in early November. The symbol, which supposedly represents the concept of cross-buying, is accompanied by direct mentions of the “crossbuy-tag” nomenclature in snippets of the digital platform’s CSS code.

Subsequent analysis of technology portals and known leakers confirmed thatIt is possible to view the new symbols. These graphic elements were injected into the “About” section of the PlayStation Network user account, proving their authenticity and that they are not residual code from old versions.

  • New cross-buy icon includes PC and PS5 symbols.
  • Reference to “crossbuy-tag” was found in internal PS Store code files.
  • The feature may be similar to Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing the use of the same title on different devices.

Internal testing ongoing since June

Investigations indicate that the inclusion of new elements in the PlayStation Store structure may not be recent. As reported by Dealabs, tests related to the new cross-buy system may have been carried out internally by Sony since June.

This information reinforces the hypothesis that the company has been working discreetly on platform integration. The expansion of PlayStation’s presence on PC has been notable in recent years, with the migration of major exclusive titles. The introduction of its own launcher on the personal computer also complements the possibility of this newacquisition system.

Economy and flexibility for the consumer

The realization of the unified purchasing feature represents a direct and significant benefit for players. In practical terms, the possibility of purchasing a game and accessing it both on the console and on the personal computer increases flexibility and generates savings.

There is still no clarity on which titles would be included in the cross-buy. It was not disclosed whether the functionality will only cover games developed by Sony itself or will extend to titles from partner studios. The market trend, however, points to greater integration between different ecosystems.

Historical precedent and platform strategy

The concept of cross-buying already existed in the PlayStation universe, but in a different context. Previously, the term was applied at the time of the launch of the PS Vita portable. Some games offered the benefit of being playable on both PS3/PS4 and Vita with just one purchase.

The current difference is integration with the PC, a rapidly expanding market for the brand. This move is seen as strategic to consolidate PlayStation’s presence outside the console environment, maintaining control over distribution and user experience. The initiative could be a counterattack to already established multiplatform models.

Official company positioning and rumors

So far, Sony has not officially commented on the findings, which keeps the functionality in the field of rumors and speculation. The icon and code may be part of internal tests, which may even be discontinued at any time.

However, the verified presence of new terms and symbols in the digital store is a strong indication that the implementation is under development. The community is awaiting a statement from the company to clarify the scope and release date of the potential cross-buy between PS5 and PC.
