São Paulo and Flamengo drew 2-2 on the night of Wednesday, November 5th, at Vila Belmiro, in Santos, in the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship. Tricolor opened the scoring with Luciano in the 3rd minute, after an error in the red-black ball. Flamengo reacted quickly and equalized with Arrascaeta, from the penalty spot, in the 8th minute, scoring his 95th goal for the club and becoming the highest foreign scorer in Flamengo’s history.

In the second half, Samuel Lino turned for the visitor in the 16th minute, with an assist from Arrascaeta after a pass on the baseline. The situation changed in the 21st minute, when Gonzalo Plata received a straight red card for a strong tackle on Arboleda. With one more, São Paulo pressed and equalized in the 35th minute, with Ferreira completing a cross in the area.

  • São Paulo goals: Luciano (3’/1st Q) and Ferreira (35’/2nd Q).
  • Flamengo goals: Arrascaeta (8’/1st Q, penalty) and Samuel Lino (16’/2nd Q).
  • Expulsion: Gonzalo Plata (Flamengo, 21’/2nd Q).

The result left Flamengo with 65 points, in second place, behind Palmeiras in terms of the number of victories (20 to 19). Palmeiras plays this Thursday against Santos and could take advantage.

Eventful first half

The confrontation started intensely in Vila Belmiro. Erick Pulgar missed a pass in the red and black defense, allowing Tapia to intercept and leave Luciano free to open the scoring in the 3rd minute. Flamengo didn’t take long to respond: Arrascaeta conceded a penalty and converted, equalizing in the 8th minute.

The Rio team controlled the actions, with greater possession of the ball and created chances. Samuel Lino had a goal disallowed for offside after a cross from Arrascaeta. São Paulo threatened with counterattacks, but lacked precision in finishing.

Tricolor played at a temporary home due to shows in Morumbi. Audience of 11,228 fans generated income of R$ 884,193.50.

Turning and expulsion change the game

In the second half, Flamengo maintained its initial dominance. Arrascaeta fought for the ball on the baseline, played for Emerson Royal to cross and Samuel Lino finished strongly, turning the ball around in the 16th minute. The goal encouraged the visitor, who almost expanded.

In the 21st minute, Plata committed a hard foul on Arboleda and was sent off directly. Filipe Luís dropped the team to protect the result. São Paulo grew with numerical superiority and drew in a triangulation finished by Ferreira.

Flamengo resisted in the final minutes, with Rossi making important saves. The draw frustrated the red and black’s chance of leading alone.

Ball possession and statistics

Flamengo finished with 58% possession of the ball, against 42% for São Paulo. There were 12 red-black shots (5 on goal) and 10 tricolors (4 on target).

  • Right passes: Flamengo 478, São Paulo 312.
  • Corners: Flamengo 6, São Paulo 4.

Post-game reactions

Samuel Lino valued the point won away from home. São Paulo rose to 45 points, in 8th place, still outside the G-7.
