Sony announced the deactivation of several online features on the PlayStation 4 (PS4) from autumn 2026, marking the gradual end of support for the console launched in 2013. The decision, revealed by internal documents obtained by Insider Gaming, affects new games submitted for approval after the period, which corresponds to March to June on Brasil. The objective is to consolidate the PlayStation 5 (PS5) as the company’s main platform. Jogadores will have a more restricted online experience in future PS4 titles.

Among the changes are the removal of features such as Feed from Atividades and data storage by title. The measure reflects Sony’s transition to the new generation of consoles.

  • Functions affected: Feed of Atividades, Title Small Store (TSS), and Title User Store (TUS).
  • Current games: Títulos already released will not be immediately impacted.
  • Focus on PS5: Sony prioritizes services like PlayStation Plus and PSN in the new generation.

Starting in 2026, new PS4 games will not be able to use Feed from Atividades, which allows for social interactions such as sharing achievements. Sony reported that the measure aims to optimize development for the PS5.

Another feature removed will be small title storage (TSS), used to save game-specific data. Title user storage (TUS) will also be deprecated, limiting customizations.

Impact on new releases

Restricting features will reduce connectivity for new games on PS4. Recursos like word filters and media sharing via Web API will not be available.

The online experience will be more basic, focusing only on essential functions. Sony did not detail whether already released games will lose support in the future.

Players will still be able to access current titles without immediate changes. The company recommends migrating to PS5 for the full experience.

Transition to PS5

Sony had already signaled a change of focus for the PS5 since its launch in 2020. The company invests in services such as PlayStation Plus, with monthly games and cloud storage.

The PS5 also offers backwards compatibility with most PS4 games. Isso allows players to continue using their favorite titles on the new platform.

Internal documents show that Sony plans to focus resources on more advanced technologies. The company seeks to meet the demands of the current market.

Console memory

The PS4, launched in 2013, has sold more than 117 million units by 2022, according to data from Sony. The console marked the industry with games like The Last of Us Part II and God of War. Apesar after the end of some functions, it remains relevant for millions of players.

Industry strategy

Sony’s decision follows a common movement in the games sector. Empresas like Microsoft and Nintendo also reduce support for older consoles over time.

The PS5 already dominates the market, with more than 61 million units sold by July 2025, according to a report from Sony. The transition is seen as inevitable by analysts.

The gradual shutdown of PS4’s online functions does not affect offline games. Sony guarantees that the console will still support system updates.

What to expect in the future

PS4 players will need to adapt to limitations in new titles. Sony encourages migration to the PS5, which offers improved graphics and reduced loading times.
