The current NASA organizes a live broadcast this Wednesday (19) to present unprecedented records of the interstellar star 3I/ATLAS, captured by several space missions. The event, held at Voos Espaciais Goddard of Centro, at Maryland, will take place at 3pm. (local time) and will be broadcast worldwide. As photographs of As, including records from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft’s HiRISE camera, were retained for about 40 days due to bureaucratic problems. The agency brings together experts to explain the scientific importance of these observations.

The star, discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS system, is the third interstellar object identified in Sistema Solar. The passage of Sua close to Marte, between October 2nd and 3rd, allowed detailed captures of its anti-tail and gas jets. The presentation aims to clarify characteristics of 3I/ATLAS, such as its composition and trajectory. The event is open to the public through NASA+, YouTube and other platforms.

  • Participants include Amit Kshatriya, NASA Associate Administrator.
  • Nicky Fox, Diretoria leader of Missões Científicas, will detail the objectives.
  • Shawn Domagal-Goldman and Tom Statler will cover astrophysical aspects.

Discovery details

3I/ATLAS was identified by the NASA-funded ATLAS telescope on Chile. The hyperbolic trajectory of Sua confirms its origin outside of Sistema Solar.

The star, with an estimated core between 440 meters and 5.6 km, does not pose any risk to Terra. The Ele has reached 29 million kilometers of the Marte and will reach 270 million kilometers of the Terra in December.

records retained by bureaucracy

The HiRISE camera photographs, with a resolution of 30 km per pixel, were captured in October. Elas shows the star’s antitail, a rare phenomenon observed in Sol.

The delay in disclosure, according to astrophysicist Avi Loeb, was due to administrative obstacles. As records from As promise greater clarity about the structure of the star.

The HiRISE camera, installed on the MRO probe, recorded side views of the gas jets. As observations from Essas complement data from telescopes like Hubble and James Webb.

NASA plans to use the records to refine studies of interstellar comets. Cientistas from all over the world await the publication of the records.

Participation of experts

NASA leaders will lead the presentation with technical analysis. Eles will explain how 3I/ATLAS is different from local comets.

The presence of Amit Kshatriya and Nicky Fox reinforces the relevance of the event. The duo will contextualize the agency’s role in space exploration.

Public Access Streaming

The event will be broadcast on platforms such as NASA+, YouTube and Amazon Prime. The agency encourages questions from the public through the hashtag #AskNASA.

Journalists can participate virtually by presenting their credentials in advance. The broadcast starts at 5pm. (Brasília time).

Broadcast on Olhar Digital includes commentary from Marcelo Zurita, Sociedade Astronômica Brasileira. Ele will address the scientific impact of the records.

Scientific importance

3I/ATLAS offers a unique window to study objects from other stellar systems. The composition of Sua, with water, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, reveals the conditions of its origin. Dados collected by missions such as SPHEREx and ESA’s ExoMars expands knowledge about its formation. Analysis of these records can shed light on the processes of galactic evolution by comparing interstellar comets with solar objects.

Additional observations

ESA provided data from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter probe, refining the star’s trajectory. As Novas observations are planned with the Juice mission in 2026.
