The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, the third object of its kind identified by humanity, presents this November its most extensive and brightest ionic tail since its discovery in July 2025. The phenomenon occurs because the comet gets closer and closer to the inner Sol, increasing the release and ionization of gases.

The intense activity confirms that 3I/ATLAS remains highly active as it passes through Sistema Solar. The ionic tail always points in the opposite direction to Sol, pushed by the solar wind.

  • Observations combine 18 exposures of 120 seconds each
  • Telescopes located at Observatório of Castelmartini, Itália
  • Structure visible even on medium-sized amateur equipment

Origin and unique characteristics

3I/ATLAS was detected on July 1, 2025 by the ATLAS system, installed on Chile. Sua hyperbolic trajectory proves origin outside of Sistema Solar.

The object has a rare composition, with the confirmed presence of nickel vapor and metallic iron. Essas characteristics differ from most comets in our system.

Ion tail behavior

The ionic tail forms when ultraviolet radiation from the Sol ionizes molecules released by the nucleus. The charged particles follow the magnetic field of the solar wind.

In the case of 3I/ATLAS, the increase in brightness results from the higher sublimation rate of metallic materials. The current structure surpasses all previous observations in extent and luminosity.

Importance for astronomical research

Interstellar comets offer direct data on the formation of distant planetary systems. 3I/ATLAS is the first of its kind with sufficient activity for detailed studies from Terra onwards.

The high current luminosity allows for more accurate spectra collection. Pesquisadores monitor chemical variations in real time.

Trajectory and future of the object

The comet follows a hyperbolic orbit and will not be trapped by solar gravity. Após going through perihelion, expected in the coming months, will definitively leave Sistema Solar.

The current speed exceeds 30 km/s in relation to Sol. The object is expected to move away irreversibly from 2026.

Observation by amateur astronomers

The high brightness makes 3I/ATLAS visible with 20 cm or larger telescopes in dark sky locations. The ion tail appears bluish in long exposure photographs.

Astronomy apps indicate exact coordinates for nighttime location. The object currently transits the constellation of Serpentário.

The intense activity of 3I/ATLAS represents a unique opportunity for study. Astrônomos maintain continuous monitoring by global networks of telescopes.
