Geely, through its sub-brand Livan Auto, presented the Livan Smurf, an electric microcar designed for mobility in urban centers. With a starting price of 36,000 yuan, equivalent to approximately R$27,208 in direct conversion, the vehicle positions itself as a robust competitor for the BYD Dolphin Mini in the Asian market.

Launched in August 2025, the model stands out for its compact design and affordable cost, targeting consumers who seek practicality and savings for their daily lives in cities. With a look that resembles a “cute” car and reduced dimensions, the Smurf promises to shake up the subcompact segment.

Geely evaluates the possible arrival of this model at Brasil, where it would face a series of logistical and adaptation challenges to the local market. The vehicle integrates minimalism, technology and energy efficiency, but its viability in the national territory will depend on aggressive pricing strategies.

The strategic positioning of Livan Smurf

The Livan Smurf comes amid the growing popularity of electric microcars, which are gaining traction in regions such as Ásia and Europa. Contudo, these vehicles still face some resistance in Brasil, where SUVs continue to dominate sales preferences.

At just 3.10 meters long, the Smurf is notably smaller than the BYD Dolphin Mini, which measures 3.78 meters. Seu engine, with 40 horsepower, is modest and was designed for urban use, which limits its performance on road trips.

Technical and aesthetic details of the vehicle

The Livan Smurf adopts a look reminiscent of toy cars, with round headlights that resemble “doll eyes” and 14-inch wheels with a “Vibrant Pinwheel” design. The square, minimalist aesthetic is designed to maximize internal space, despite its compact dimensions. The Geely prioritized a functional interior, offering finishes in vibrant colors such as Rosa Sakura, Cinza Castelo and Verde Floresta, and incorporating a large central screen, in line with the Chinese trend of valuing technology and comfort.

On the other hand, the BYD model offers greater power, with 75 horsepower, and a range of 280 km, according to Inmetro. Suas dimensions are more generous, including a 2.50 meter wheelbase and a trunk capacity of 230 liters.

While the Smurf is aimed at ultra-urban mobility, the Dolphin Mini establishes itself as a more versatile alternative, suitable for both city traffic and short-distance trips. The price difference between the two reflects the greater level of refinement of the Dolphin Mini, which includes features such as six airbags, a 10.1-inch rotating multimedia center and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

Market potential and obstacles for Geely in the country

The possible arrival of the Livan Smurf to the The competitive price of the Smurf on the Mesmo with this increase, the value would still be below the Renault Kwid E-Tech, which costs R$99,990.

The Brazilian automotive market, predominantly inclined towards SUVs, presents challenges for microcars like the Smurf. Consumer preference for larger vehicles and the still limited infrastructure for charging electric vehicles may hinder their acceptance. However, the success of the Dolphin Mini, which outsold established models such as the Toyota Yaris Sedan and Renault Duster, suggests a growing interest in more affordable electric cars.

Geely’s global strategy and the microcar segment

Geely, one of the largest car manufacturers in China, has expanded its global presence through brands such as Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, in addition to Livan Auto, which is dedicated to more affordable vehicles. The launch of the Smurf reinforces the company’s strategy of competing in the electric microcar segment, which has grown in the Ásia and Europa driven by demand for sustainable mobility solutions in densely populated urban areas.

In China, intense price competition between automakers, including BYD and Tesla, has generated deflation that is a cause for concern for the local government. Modelos like Smurf, with their prices below 36,000 yuan, accentuate this competition, forcing brands to operate with reduced profit margins. Geely relies on high sales volumes to offset costs, a tactic that can be replicated in emerging markets, such as Brasil.

Repercussions on the light vehicle segment

The potential introduction of the Livan Smurf into the Brasil could intensify pressure on competitors such as the BYD Dolphin Mini and the Renault Kwid E-Tech to revise their pricing. The Geely would need to establish a network of dealerships and technical assistance, in addition to adapting the vehicle to the requirements of the Inmetro. The final price, even with taxes included, could still be competitive, especially compared to the Fiat Mobi, which, although cheaper, does not offer the benefits of an electric vehicle.
