Bia Haddad Maia reveals egg freezing journey during break ahead of WTA circuit return

Brazilian tennis star Bia Haddad Maia is set to rejoin the WTA Tour on Monday, February 12, competing in the WTA 250 event in Adelaide. Her return follows a significant break designed to recuperate both physically and mentally after several intense seasons on the circuit.

During this period away from the courts, the athlete also pursued a deeply personal goal. On Thursday, February 8, Haddad Maia disclosed that she utilized her time off to freeze her eggs, a step towards her long-held dream of motherhood.

The decision highlights the growing trend of female athletes proactively managing their careers and personal aspirations. This strategic move allows for greater flexibility in future family planning while maintaining a demanding professional schedule.

A significant pause for personal and professional growth

Haddad Maia emphasized the critical nature of her recent hiatus, describing it as an essential period for recovery. She reflected on five demanding years that brought immense challenges, significant achievements, and valuable lessons. This intense commitment, she noted, inevitably takes its toll on an athlete’s well-being.

The time spent away from competitive play proved highly beneficial, allowing her to feel completely rejuvenated and ready for a new phase in her career. “It was a very important break to rest my body and mind after five very intense years of great dedication, great moments, and learning, and that comes at a price,” Haddad Maia stated. She added, “I made the most of this time away from the courts and I feel recharged for a new cycle. I even took this moment to freeze my eggs, as I have the dream of being a mother.” This candid revelation underscores the multifaceted pressures and choices faced by elite sportswomen.

WTA’s pioneering support for athlete-mothers

The WTA’s protected ranking program played a crucial role in Haddad Maia’s decision-making process. This initiative is specifically designed to support players who wish to take time off for maternity, enabling them to step away from the circuit without a detrimental impact on their ranking positions. The program allows players to use their protected ranking for up to three tournaments, specifically WTA 125, 250, or 500 events, upon their return.

“It is a very important program where the WTA is being a pioneer in support, helping athletes to plan their careers and motherhood,” Haddad Maia lauded. Such provisions are vital for retaining experienced talent in women’s tennis, acknowledging the unique career timelines of female athletes. The policy ensures that a break for family planning does not equate to a complete professional setback.

Return to competition and tactical adjustments

Bia Haddad Maia has not competed since September of last year, when her run at the WTA 250 event in Seoul, South Korea, concluded in the second round. Following that tournament, she announced her temporary withdrawal from the professional circuit to focus on recovery and personal endeavors. Her upcoming return marks a highly anticipated moment for fans and competitors alike.

During her extended preseason, the Brazilian ace implemented several significant enhancements to her game. She dedicated ample time to training, ensuring a methodical and productive preparation phase. This focused approach enabled her to fine-tune aspects of her technique that had been targets for improvement.

“I had a longer, calmer preseason and it was very productive. I was able to make some small technical changes to some strokes that we already had in mind, I reached the level I wanted, and I feel ready to return to the circuit with strength,” she affirmed. These strategic adjustments aim to boost her performance and competitive edge as she re-enters the demanding world of professional tennis.

Confirmed schedule and singles focus

The Brazilian has confirmed her early-season tournament schedule, outlining a packed itinerary that begins with the WTA 250 in Adelaide. This event will serve as a critical warm-up before she heads to Melbourne for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.

Following her participation in the season’s opening major, Haddad Maia is scheduled to compete in the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi, maintaining a rigorous international circuit. She will then move on to the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Doha, completing a challenging sequence of high-profile competitions.

For the initial segment of the year, Haddad Maia has stated a clear intention to concentrate solely on singles play. “I start the year here in Adelaide and then continue to Melbourne, subsequently playing in Abu Dhabi and Doha. At this moment, I will focus only on singles and later we will analyze for the rest of the season,” she concluded, indicating a strategic prioritization of her energy and efforts. This focused approach aims to maximize her performance in individual competition, potentially setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the 2025 season.
