A new modification developed by the gaming community is redefining the visual experience of Grand Theft Auto IV, a classic originally released in 2008. The change is so significant that it completely transforms the atmosphere of Liberty City, offering ultra-realistic lighting and dynamic reflections without altering the original character models or textures created by Rockstar Games.

The initiative, called GTA IV RTX Remix Compatibility Mod, is now available for free download and stands out for its ease of installation. The developers managed to overcome the compatibility challenges between the old RAGE graphics engine and the modern Nvidia remastering system, providing an automatic installer that simplifies the entire process for users.

This unofficial visual update demonstrates the technology’s potential to revitalize older games, allowing a new generation of gamers and veterans to rediscover the title with a graphical quality that previously seemed unattainable. The result is a more vivid, immersive and visually impactful Liberty City.

The visual revolution with path tracing

Path tracing represents the most advanced form of ray tracing, a rendering technique that simulates the physical behavior of light in a virtual environment with unprecedented accuracy. Diferente Traditional raster lighting systems, which use approximations to create light and shadow, path tracing calculates the trajectory of millions of individual light rays in each frame. Isso allows light to interact naturally with all surfaces in the scene, bouncing, being absorbed or reflected in a physically correct way. In the context of GTA IV, this technology translates into a radical transformation of global lighting. The wet streets of Liberty City now display seamless, dynamic reflections of buildings, moving vehicles, and neon signs, which distort realistically in puddles of water. Shadows become soft and precise, cast correctly across all objects and characters, eliminating the jagged and imprecise outlines of the original version. Sunlight streams through windows and illuminates interiors convincingly, while car headlights and city lights create a much denser and more atmospheric nighttime visual spectacle.

Technical implementation details

The RTX Remix platform works as an intermediate layer that intercepts the game’s original rendering instructions and replaces them with a modern pipeline based on Vulkan and Direct3D 12.

This initial process was refined by manually adjusting more than 300 different materials to ensure that glass, metal, water and asphalt reacted to light as faithfully as possible. The team of modders overcame the complexity of the RAGE engine, known for its closed structure, to allow the RTX Remix to take full control of lighting and post-processing effects.

Hardware requirements and the impact on performance

The implementation of such advanced technology requires robust hardware to function satisfactorily. Testes of performance indicates that even high-end graphics cards, such as an RTX 5080, achieve an average of 45 frames per second (fps) at 4K resolution with path tracing in native mode.

To achieve higher, playable frame rates, the use of upscaling technologies becomes essential. Enabling DLSS 3.7 in “Quality” mode, combined with the Frame Generation feature, boosts performance to over 100 fps while maintaining exceptional image quality.

Owners of cards like the RTX 4070 can expect a stable experience above 60 fps at 1440p, as long as they use the same optimization technologies. Já para quem possui uma RTX 3060, a jogabilidade recomendada é em 1080p, com o DLSS no modo “Performance”, resultando em uma taxa que varia entre 40 e 50 fps.

In addition to the video card, a modern processor such as the Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel i5-12400F is recommended, along with 16 GB of RAM and, obligatorily, an NVMe SSD to avoid bottlenecks when loading textures and city assets.

Simplified installation process

One of the great merits of the project is its accessibility. Conscientes that installing complex mods can be a hurdle for many players, the developers have created an executable installer that automates all the necessary steps.

The user simply needs to have a full and legitimate version of Grand Theft Auto IV installed on their computer and ensure that the Nvidia drivers are updated to the latest version. The installer takes care of copying the necessary files, applying the optimal settings and integrating the mod into the game without the need for complex manual intervention.

Additional tools for creators

The mod package goes beyond simple graphical improvements, including features designed for content creators and virtual photography enthusiasts. A free camera tool (FreeCam) has been integrated, allowing players to explore Liberty City from any angle without the restrictions of the game’s default camera.

Additionally, configuration presets optimized for different purposes were included, such as high-resolution screenshots, 4K video recording at 60 fps and even a specific mode for streaming, which seeks to balance visual quality with performance stability during live broadcasts.

Main visual improvements

The set of visual enhancements radically transforms the perception of the game. Indirect global illumination, with multiple “bounces” of light, adds depth and realism to every scene, especially in indoor areas that previously appeared flat and lifeless.

Real-time reflections are now present on every shiny surface, from car bodies to store windows to puddles, reflecting the world around them with stunning accuracy.

The shadows, in turn, stop being dark and generic blocks and become soft and dynamic, adapting perfectly to the geometry of the objects and the position of the light sources, which contributes to greater visual cohesion throughout the city.

The future of modding

This project for Grand Theft Auto IV is a milestone for the modding community and serves as a powerful showcase for the potential of RTX Remix technology. Ele proves that classic titles, even those over a decade old, can be visually revitalized by dedicated fans, offering a refreshed experience that rivals official remasters.
