The modding community has redefined the visual limits of Grand Theft Auto IV, the acclaimed 2008 title from Rockstar Games. The developer known as ‘xoxor4d’ has made the first version of his mod publicly available that integrates NVIDIA’s RTX Remix technology into the game. The main innovation is the complete implementation of path tracing, an advanced rendering technique that simulates the physical behavior of light, drastically modernizing the lighting in Liberty City to a level of photorealism unprecedented for the game.

The project can now be downloaded directly from the GitHub platform, and is intended exclusively for players who have NVIDIA RTX series graphics cards. The modification goes beyond introducing the new technology, also resolving a series of incompatibilities that existed between the game’s original graphics engine, built on DirectX 9, and the modern RTX Remix platform. Após installation, a settings menu can be accessed by the shortcut Alt + X, allowing users to perform detailed graphical adjustments in real time.

The first videos and tests demonstrate a notable graphical evolution. The dynamic reflections on wet surfaces, the precisely projected shadows and the lights from vehicles and streetlights illuminating the environment in an organic way are the highlights. Contudo, this visual revolution imposes a high performance cost, requiring cutting-edge hardware to maintain a fluid gaming experience, especially at higher resolutions.

The renewed lighting of Liberty City

The impact of path tracing in Liberty City is profound, recalculating in real time how light interacts with each surface of the environment. The city’s night lights, car headlights and reflections in windows and wet asphalt take on a photorealistic quality. The developer has taken care to tune the system so that wet surfaces appear realistic, avoiding the exaggerated “mirror” effect that can occur in early implementations, ensuring that the game’s original art direction is respected and improved upon.

In addition to global illumination, the modder paid attention to technical details crucial to visual consistency. Foi carried out adjustment work on “alpha blending”, which improves the rendering of transparent objects such as glass and fences. Para To optimize performance, emissive lights, such as those from traffic lights and billboards, are rendered by a fixed function, relieving the burden of path tracing. The in-game settings menu offers graphical presets that allow players to balance visual quality and performance, while dynamic shadows on buildings and vehicles make the city more vivid and believable.

Hardware Requirements and the Performance Challenge

Performance tests confirm that modernizing GTA IV is costly. Utilizando a system with an Intel Core i7-14700F processor, 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a supposed RTX 5080, the benchmarks show the limits of combining an old game with new technology.

At native 4K resolution, without the aid of upscaling technologies, the average frames per second is consistently below the 60 fps mark. Essa limitation is a significant obstacle to smooth gameplay.

Frequent drops to levels considered unplayable by many enthusiasts were recorded, varying in the range of 35 to 45 frames per second in moments of greater graphic intensity or in dense areas of the city.

This limitation is not only due to the graphics card, but mainly to the game’s architecture. GTA IV is notoriously “CPU bound”, meaning performance is often limited by the processor’s ability to handle game logic such as pedestrian artificial intelligence and heavy traffic.

Installation and compatibility details

The installation process is designed to be as simple as possible. Players simply need to extract the mod files to the game’s main directory, where the “GTAIV.exe” executable is located. The download package already includes the adapted version of FusionFix, making life easier for the user and avoiding complex additional steps.

It’s crucial to note that the mod is exclusively compatible with “The Complete Edition 1.2.0.59” version of the game. Older or modified Versões may present conflicts and not work correctly, resulting in crashes or failures in rendering new lighting effects. The developer also provides an alternative instruction for specific cases, such as renaming the “gta4-rtx.dll” file to “a_gta4-rtx.asi”, ensuring that the mod is loaded correctly by the game on different system configurations.

The technology behind graphic modernization

The creation of this mod represents a feat of reverse engineering and technical dedication. Developer ‘xoxor4d’ had to dissect the original GTA IV renderer code to intercept draw calls and translate them into a format compatible with the RTX Remix platform. Esse process involved in-depth analysis of how the RAGE graphics engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) handled the rendering of objects, textures and effects. Elementos complex features such as the dynamic weather system, volumetric fog rendering, and multiple post-processing effects were analyzed and adapted to work in harmony with path tracing. Dados that were previously opaque and specific to the game engine are now transformed into readable inputs for the new system, allowing modern lighting to be correctly applied to the game’s original geometry and materials. The mod also includes optional filters, such as the ability to disable artificial fill lights, which were used in the original game to simulate indirect lighting, to achieve a “pure” lighting result, coming only from real light sources in the scene, such as the sun, moon, and city lights. Esse level of technical intervention demonstrates the complexity of applying cutting-edge technologies to games that were not designed for them.

To combat CPU bottleneck issues, a notorious feature of the GTA IV engine, the developer has included scripts that manage processor affinity, a smart solution for optimizing task distribution. The recommendation is to use a configuration file that dedicates two CPU cores exclusively to the main GTA IV process, leaving the remaining cores free to be used by the RTX Remix. Essa separation of tasks results in an experience with fewer stutters and sudden frame drops, especially in areas with many NPCs and heavy traffic. Fine-tuning in the mod menu (accessible via Alt + X) is also vital for a good experience. Utilizar the lowest quality presets and combining DLSS in “Performance” mode with Frame Generation enabled is the recommended formula for achieving stable and fluid gameplay at 4K resolution, mitigating both GPU and CPU bottlenecks.

Crucial stability optimizations

The release of version 1.0.0 is just the beginning of a promising project, as the RTX Remix platform opens up a range of possibilities for the modding community. Entre future improvements include the creation and import of PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures, which react to light in a physically correct way, and the replacement of character and vehicle models with versions with higher polygon counts, increasing the overall detail of the world.

The developer has already signaled plans for future updates that could include virtual reality (VR) support and new camera options, paving the way for a full remaster of the game, driven by the fan community itself. The publication of this version ends the early access period, which was restricted to supporters of Patreon, democratizing access to the mod for all players interested in revisiting Liberty City with a completely renewed and modern visual perspective.
