Volkswagen officially announced the new Tukan pickup truck, a model that marks the brand’s return to the development of a new pickup truck after almost two decades. The vehicle will be produced at the São José factory of the Pinhais, in the Paraná, and is scheduled for commercial launch in 2027. The company highlighted that the

The model appears in a segment that has recorded constant growth in recent years. The pickup arrives to position the Volkswagen more competitively compared to current leaders, especially in the ranking of best-selling vehicles in the country.

The canary yellow color chosen for the first image released references the brand’s sponsorship of the Brazilian women’s football team during the Copa of the Mundo in 2027, which will be held at the Brasil.

Available design and configurations

The Tukan features modern lines that refer to the Tarok concept, exhibited by the Volkswagen years ago. The model adopts rounded features at the front and more robust sides, creating a look in line with the brand’s current utility vehicles.

The vehicle will be offered in single-cab and double-cab versions. The single cabin configuration meets heavy work demands, while the double cabin prioritizes mixed use between leisure and family transport. The bucket maintains generous proportions for load, with details that facilitate access and protection of the load.

  • Simple cabin aimed at fleet owners and intense commercial use.
  • Double cabin with four doors and expanded interior space.
  • Finishing options that vary between entry-level and top-of-the-line versions.

Motorization and embedded technologies

Volkswagen confirmed that all launches in 2026 and 2027 will feature some form of electrification. The Tukan should follow this strategy, offering versions with a 48-volt mild hybrid system combined with the 1.5 TSI Evo engine.

This set promises a balance between performance and reduced consumption, with selective deactivation of cylinders in situations of low demand. The brand is still evaluating options with the 1.0 TSI engine for entry-level versions, maintaining front-wheel drive in all configurations.

The MQB A0 platform, already used in the company’s other compact models, guarantees structural rigidity and optimized internal space. The rear suspension system adopts a rigid axle with leaf springs, a common solution in the segment to support high loads without compromising durability.

The pickup incorporates connectivity features such as a multimedia center compatible with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. Assistentes driving capabilities, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, appear on more equipped versions.

National production and market strategy

The Paraná factory of São José of the Pinhais receives adaptations to accommodate the Tukan assembly line. The unit already produces other models of the brand and concentrates a significant part of the South American operation of Volkswagen.

Choosing local production allows for more affordable prices and greater agility in meeting Brazilian demand. The company projects initial volume that positions the model among the main competitors in the segment.

The pickup truck market records continuous expansion in the Brasil, driven by professional and private use. Modelos compact and intermediate vehicles account for the majority of sales, with emphasis on vehicles that combine load capacity and family comfort.

  • Total investment of R$20 billion in the region by 2028.
  • Generation of direct and indirect jobs in the automotive chain in Paraná.
  • Integration with local suppliers for specific components.

Positioning against competitors

Tukan enters a segment dominated by Fiat for more than two decades. The Strada maintains absolute leadership among the country’s best-selling vehicles, followed by intermediate models such as the Toro and Montana.

The Volkswagen seeks to regain share with updated design and efficient engine options. The brand had not achieved significant results in the segment since the 2000s, when Saveiro competed for more balanced sales.

The arrival of Tukan coincides with the renewal of direct rivals. Fabricantes upgrade lines to meet stricter emissions standards and demands for advanced connectivity.

The strategy includes specific versions for fleet owners, with different maintenance packages. The dealership network receives training to service the new model since pre-launch.

Expectations for the commercial launch

The full release of Tukan takes place throughout 2027, with regional performances scheduled for the beginning of the year. Volkswagen plans campaigns that highlight the Brazilianness of the name and the connection with sports sponsorship.

The pickup represents part of an offensive of 21 new or renewed models in the América of the Sul. The brand has already delivered updates to lines such as T-Cross, Nivus and Amarok in recent months.

Industry analysts monitor initial performance to assess the impact on the national sales ranking. The combination of local production, electrification and competitive design positions the Tukan as a relevant option in the segment.

The model arrives at a time of transition to more sustainable vehicles in Brasil. Charging infrastructure and government incentives influence the acceptance of electrified versions among consumers.

Additional project details

The name Tukan derives from the toucan bird, symbolizing Brazilian identity and a strong presence. The choice reflects the strategy of bringing the brand closer to the local public through cultural references.

Volkswagen carried out intensive tests in different regions of the country to validate durability and performance. Protótipos camouflaged vehicles traveled thousands of kilometers in real conditions of use.

The bucket receives standard protective coating on superior versions and strategic tie-down hooks. The rear trunk maintains competitive capacity within the intermediate segment.

The company prepares original accessories such as santantônio, marine canopy and bucket extenders. Esses items will be available at launch for immediate customization.
